📜 We've got a new article out 📜

*Angst M, Müller NN, Walker V. Automated extraction of discourse networks from large volumes of media data* (open access)

doi.org/10.1017/nws.2025.4

As part of our sustainability.discourses project, we developed an automated method to gather and track discourse networks around urban sustainable mobility, based on media data.

The article describes the approach in detail and reports an evaluation of the internal validity (do we measure what we ourselves think we measure) of the pipeline.

tl;dnr: Automating discourse network data gathering can work well to capture broader tendencies. In many cases, it is likely not worth investing in automating data gathering to understand discourse however.

First of all, I moved instance! I am now self hosting my own #gotosocial instance, which uses the #Mastodon #API, but is easy to self host, and is super chill on the resources. This also means that I can now post long form content! 5000 characters is a blog post in itself, so I can blog AND microblog.

Secondly, I released 1.1.1 of the #alectors library for #nlproc with #rl. I should probably start keeping a changelog or a release log, but I am just getting to grips with what #semver is and how to use it in general. As always you can find the source code at https://erga.apotheke.earth/aethrvmn/alectors which is yet another #selfhosted project, a git #forgejo.

Mobile email UIs added AI replies "on top". These popups hide draft & email, so users need to remember all info from the email while prompting & checking AI results. We've redesigned this with local responses, resulting in flexible workflows - both with & without AI. 👇🧵#CHI2025 #HCI #NLP #NLProc #AI

We’ve redesigned mobile email replies - with & without AI. Tap sentences while reading to enter local responses (or get suggestions). Then connect them on a usual draft screen (or let AI do just that). Result: Flexible workflows with varying speed and control. #CHI2025 preprint in comments.

Multiple #ML / #AI postdoctoral positions are available at the University of Oslo. At least two of them are directly related to #NLProc (evaluating #LLM and separating linguistic and factual knowledge in #LLM).

On March 13, there will be a public Zoom call where you can ask questions about the positions and about life in #Norway. Everyone is welcome!

Functions of Interjections

- Pausing and Holding: "Um" or "uh" signals that a speaker is not finished.
- Repairing Communication: "Huh?" or "what?" prompts clarification.
- Encouraging Continuation: "Mm-hmm" signals attentiveness.
- Negotiating Ground Rules: Words like "wow!" indicate interest, and "uh-huh" suggests limited engagement.

Lacking these cues in #generativeAI-based language learning is especially noticeable.

We currently have two fully-funded open PhD positions in our group with a focus on #NLProc, #InformationExtraction and #TextGeneration. I can really recommend both the group as well as Philipp Cimiano as a supervisor, so take this opportunity!

Moved all my stuff out of Dropbox (didn’t have much there), Google drive is next (but it’s a bit more messy and complicated).
I have a colleague who years back was concerned about keeping work stuff (eg paper drafts, grant proposals) on Google -we’re in #nlproc, kind of the same area as they are-, and I thought he was a bit paranoid. Now I think it’s probably best to keep our stuff closer to home instead of on US clouds. #academicChatter #europe #warOnScience

🌐 Implications for Data Privacy: Our findings have real-world relevance for data owners worried about unauthorized use of their content in model training. It can also be used to support accountability of LLM evaluation in end-tasks.

💬 What Do You Think? Could MIA reach a level where data owners use it as legal evidence? How might this affect LLM deployment? Let us know! #AI #LLM #NLProc

Got a 4 in ACL Rolling Review from the Action Editor, committed to @naaclmeeting.bsky.social – and got a rejection. This process is frustrating. I want to go back to conference-level reviewing and decisions... I like the revise/resubmit idea, but this way it's more random than before... #nlp #nlproc

Hi #nlproc people my ARR area chairing docket is very very far behind (after sending reminders) and I am not able to make up the gap from office neighbours so if there's anyone able to review papers in LLM evaluation especially please message me.
