"...Black, Latino, and women service members were suddenly erased, from Sgt. William Carney, the first Black American to earn a #MedalofHonor during the #CivilWar... #JackieRobinson, World War II #TuskegeeAirmen, a decorated #JapaneseAmerican unit while Americans of Japanese descent were interned, and the famous #NavajoCodeTalkers, most of the erasure remains"

Erasure of history will eventually ask you to add it back, what a waste of life

bitter followup:

Harry hoped to become a commercial airline #pilot after he left the #military

He was rejected because he was #Black

After helping defeat #fascism in #Europe, he came home to suffer #fascist #American #racism

Now, anti-#DEI initiatives of the #Trump admin means the #AirForce removed training courses with videos of the #TuskegeeAirmen and the #Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of #WWII

(I heard this was reversed, but anti-DEI remains)

"Decorated #pilot Harry Stewart Jr., one of the last surviving #TuskegeeAirmen, dies at 100"

cnn.com/2025/02/09/us/harry-st

Non #Americans: Tuskegee Airmen were #Black fighter and bomber pilots in #WWII. The Tuskegee Airmen lost significantly fewer escorted bombers than other fighter groups

Lt. Col Stewart earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, downing 3 German aircraft in a dogfight on April 1, 1945

He was born on the 4th of July, 1924: can't get more #American than that!

Absolutely, 100%, worth the click:

>>Stewart was one of the last surviving combat pilots of the famed 332nd Fighter Group also known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The group were the nation’s first Black military pilots.

[snip]

Stewart earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for downing three German aircraft during a dogfight on April 1, 1945. He was also part of a team of four Tuskegee Airmen who won the US Air Force Top Gun flying competition in 1949, although their accomplishment would not be recognized until decades later.<<

Tuskegee Airman, retired Lt. Col. Harry Stewart Jr., has died at age 100. He had dreamed of flying since he was a child in New York, watching planes at LaGuardia airport. He went on to earn the Distinguished Flying Cross for downing three German aircraft during a dogfight in 1945, and was part of a team of four Tuskegee Airmen who won the U.S. Air Force Top Gun flying competition in 1949 — an achievement that would not be recognized until decades later. After leaving the military, Stewart hoped to become a commercial pilot, but was rejected because of his race. He told Michigan Public Radio in 2019 he had recently been moved to tears on a flight. “When I entered the plane, I looked into the cockpit there and there were two African American pilots. One was the co-pilot, and one was the pilot. But not only that, the thing that started bringing the tears to my eyes is that they were both female,” he said. Here's more from @AssociatedPress about his incredible life and accomplishments.

#ICYMI just in time for #BlackHistory month #DJT admin ordered #AirForce to delete web videos celebrating strategic accomplishments of #TuskegeeAirmen.

Also removed were materials celebrating #female #WWII pilots in #DEI purge following #AntiDEI #RWNJ #DJT edicts. The #military branch confirmed removal of #AfricanAmerican #Pilot and #FemalePilots videos to be fully compliant with #WhiteSupremacist "alignment of national security objectives".

AP News · DEI ban: Air Force removes course videos of Tuskegee Airmen, female pilotsBy TARA COPP

A Forbes article about the takedown of #TuskegeeAirmen #Air#Force webpages over the weekend.

"As the narrative around #DEI becomes more a part of the cultural zeitgeist, editorial calendars, political agendas and boardroom discussions, a very interesting question is being raised: Will Black history be classified under DEI and thus need to be removed... Or is it time we label Black history as American history, because stories such as these should be told to everyone?"
