The “Vondelpark Pavilion” is a historic building in “Het Vondelpark”, built between and the neo-Renaissance styled design came from architect Willem Hamer. It features Ionic columns, arched windows, and domed towers.

Initially a café-restaurant, it was expanded in 1890 with a bowling alley. In the 50s, it hosted “Holland Festival”. From 1972 to 2012 it housed the “Dutch Film Museum”, it reopened as “VondelCS” in 14, and housed a restaurant after that.The site now serves as an event space.

The “Wiegbrug” (bridge no. 173) is a movable bridge over the Kostverlorenvaart. It links De Clercqstraat with Admiraal de Ruijterweg. The name refers to the type of bridge built here in 1904: a rolling bascule bridge.

In 2004, artist Leonie Mijnlieff added a piece of art to the bridgekeeper’s house. Called “Boegbeeld”, the artwork marks the entrance to ‘De Baarsjes’ and refers to nearby streets, named after Dutch naval heroes. Historic ships once had decorative figureheads. Unlike those, this one doesn’t set sail. ️

An iconic “2CV” in Amsterdam’s “Swammerdambuurt”. Its full name is “Citroën 2 Chevaux”. In the Netherlands, it’s nicknamed “Lelijk eendje” (“ugly duck”).

The area is named after Dutch biologist and microscopist Jan Swammerdam (1637–1680). He is known for his groundbreaking work on insect anatomy and for being one of the first to observe red blood cells.


The neighborhood is located in the Weesperzijde area, near the Amstel River.

The intersection of Nieuwe Herengracht and Entrepotdok is located in Amsterdam’s Plantage district, a neighborhood with a strong historical and cultural character.

Nieuwe Herengracht, part of the city’s famous canal system, extends from the Herengracht and runs between the Amstel River and the Scharrebiersluis near Entrepotdok. Built in , it marks the eastern edge of the canal belt. ️

The building across the street that this little girl is looking at was built in . The apartment block is located in the “Zaagpoortbuurt” (literally: ‘sawgate area’).

Marnixstraat is a main road between two famous squares (Leidseplein and Haarlemmerplein). The street has a mix of old and modern buildings, including some from the 19th century. A great deal of it used to be part of the old city walls.

I usually avoid posting pictures of people here, but here’s an exception—an anonymous photo of my daughter, taken in our old stairwell in 2017.

The houseboat “Rumah Saya” is a motor tjalk located at the intersection of Keizersgracht and Amstel. This historic vessel, built in 1893, measures approximately 16.7 meters in length and 3.7 meters in width. ️

In Indonesian, rumah saya literally means “my house” (rumah = house, saya = I/my). In Malay, it has the same meaning.

The houseboat is situated in a prime location, close to the “National Opera”, “Koninklijk Theater Carré”, “Museum De Hermitage”, and the “Magere Brug”.

Ringdijk is a former residential address in the Watergraafsmeer neighborhood and has been squatted for quite some years by the “Anarcha-Feminist Group”.

With two fierce, seemingly Asian styled, leopards on its facade it’s hard to miss.

The Ringdijk, which surrounds the Watergraafsmeer polder, functions both as a flood defense and a scenic street with a mix of modern and traditional homes.

To safeguard the area against rising water levels, the dike has recently been raised by approximately 30 centimeters.

The Caetsbaanbrug (Bridge 112) is a fixed bridge, spanning the Lauriergracht and connecting the Prinsengracht’s southwest quay. Its name comes from the historic “Kaatsbaanpad”, which existed here before the canal was dug. The bridge dates back to at least , as seen on old maps.

In 1704, a three-arched version was built, similar to nearby bridges. The current structure, made of wrought iron and buckled plates, was constructed in .

Vijzelgracht 39 in Amsterdam is a building with a rich history. Built in the 17th century, and given a simple neck gable with plain, undecorated volutes in the 18th century.

On the first floor, where the Smiley flag is fluttering fierce, a 17th-century window arrangement is still intact.

The most famous yellow smiley face was designed in 1963 by Harvey Ball, an American graphic artist. The design featured a simple yellow circle with black dots for eyes and a curved smile. However, Ball never trademarked it, and the design spread widely.

The Hemonylaan has been enriched with various murals by the Dutch artist Hugo Kaagman. His work is characterized by the use of stencil techniques and a mix of Western and non-Western influences.

The white building on the left is the facade of the third oldest bar in town. It first opened in and it’s still there. For over 15 years, a sign behind the windows read: “Not for sale or rent.”

And yet, dozens, maybe even hundreds of people dropped a note in the mailbox, hoping to take over the legendary Amsterdam café Brandon. In vain…

The old proprietors, the Brandon family, lived above the establishment, and as long as they were alive, it would remain closed.

The café is located at Keizersgracht (corner of Leliegracht), on the edge of the Jordaan.

This historic gable stone called “Die Gode Gehoorsaamt” meaning ‘He Who Obeys God’ is placed at Nieuwe Amstelstraat 68-74.

This stone, also known as “Iosue”, depicts the biblical passage from “Joshua 10”. It portrays the Battle of Gibeon, where Joshua conquers the southern part of Canaan from the Amorites. Yahweh intervened by sending large stones from the sky to strike down the enemy forces.

Nieuwe Amstelstraat is a historic street, central to the city’s Jewish heritage. It houses the Jewish Historical Museum, showcasing Jewish culture and history in the Netherlands. The street also has several ‘Stolpersteine’ (stumbling stones) at several addresses, honoring Jewish residents deported and murdered during World War II.

“De Vier Heemskinderen brug” (the vier heemskinderen bridge), also called the “Vier Heemskinderen” Lock, is a fixed bridge in the old town.

It sits along the western quay of the Herengracht, crossing the Leidsegracht. The bridge is a municipal monument since 1995 and it is surrounded by national landmarks, like the “Krijtberg Kerk” (krijtberg church) seen over the roofs of Herengracht.

The “Nieuwe Amstelbrug” is a double iron bascule bridge, designed by Berlage. Its approach spans were made of rolled steel beams (later rebuilt in concrete) to support heavy traffic and trams.

The bridge’s mechanism was electrically powered from the start, and construction finished in (although the inscription says 1902).
