Vijzelgracht 39 in Amsterdam is a building with a rich history. Built in the 17th century, and given a simple neck gable with plain, undecorated volutes in the 18th century. 🏠

On the first floor, where the Smiley flag is fluttering fierce, a 17th-century window arrangement is still intact. 🙂

The most famous yellow smiley face was designed in 1963 by Harvey Ball, an American graphic artist. The design featured a simple yellow circle with black dots for eyes and a curved smile. However, Ball never trademarked it, and the design spread widely. 🤨

@renkotsuban
This bit in particular has bugged my aesthetic and semiotic sensibilities a bit.

To my way of thinking:

😋 - It is difficult for me to see this as anything other than an expression of enthusiasm for food. In contrast:

:p or :P - I imagine these as an off-center pet "blep" or "poo brain" face (see attachments). In my mind this represents concepts like "my thinking is a bit misguided here" or "I'm a silly little guy". Similar to how I use🙃. But:

Not that anyone cares, but I developed and shipped my La Jolla, CA company Coconut Computing's COCONET software in 1988, with what I called "Emoticons" but were, in hindsight, very early #emoji. Even included an #Emoticon Picker that let you select which one to insert into your message. That alone would be worth billions in patent income for years afterwards to some company that didn't know about my prior art. (Or maybe they did?) Had only *I* known! :-/

@evanwolf These #emoji have meaning for me, are part of my social vocabulary. (Glad to provide translations if anyone cares.)

But this list is specific to me and my tribe.

It would be enormous fun to have additional #emoticon sets to freely, easily and safely share and trade. If you don't have a set, you see the text. If you do, you see the art. Inherently viral, social, meaningful. @Mastodon future social feature?
