The Conversation: Software is increasingly being built by AI – so it’s vital to know if it can be trusted. “Software developers are already very familiar with tools such as GitHub Copilot, a kind of ChatGPT for programmers. It works something like a smart autocomplete tool to increase the productivity of human programmers. But we are now witnessing a more radical revolution, where AI […]

Tech Xplore: Human-AI relationships pose ethical issues, psychologists say. “At their extreme, people have ‘married’ their AI companions in non-legally binding ceremonies, and at least two people have killed themselves following AI chatbot advice. In an opinion paper published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, psychologists explore ethical issues associated with human-AI relationships, […]

University of Cambridge: Harmful effects of digital tech – the science ‘needs fixing’, experts argue. “Scientific research on the harms of digital technology is stuck in a ‘failing cycle’ that moves too slowly to allow governments and society to hold tech companies to account, according to two leading researchers in a new report published in the journal Science.”

> Julia Davies, of Patriotic Millionaires:

>> JULIA: Why do we look up to them? Why do we give them honorary titles when they say, "If you make me contribute a bit more to Britain, to making Britain thrive, I'm going to leave."

>> The first thing you do is take their honorary title off them. Because they clearly don't care about Britain. They don't care about their fellow British people if that's what they're willing to do.

“…the public must be understood as a collective life whose flourishing, as Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor argues, must matter to “citizens for its own sake and not just instrumentally to their several individual goods.” The question is not “what’s in it for me” but “what’s in it for us.” The public good is not a drain on our resources but a source of common purpose.”

UC Davis: UC Davis Launches ‘From Labs to Lives’ to Highlight Federally Funded Research. “The University of California, Davis, has launched a website and video series titled, ‘From Labs to Lives,’ to highlight federally funded research, describe how the research benefits the public, and share the consequences to the public if funding is reduced or eliminated.”

@tante@tante.cc @tante@tldr.nettime.org I steadily suggest to apply Mancur Olson's theory of collective action and public goods to get a grip about the #foss phenomenon. The incentive to give birth to Free Open Source Software, to provide, maintain and improve it, will not proportionally grow with its user base for economic reasons. Moreover, the work to spread it has also to be discussed by means of the new institutional economics. See plinubius.de/tag/olson1992/ #Kollektivgut #publicgood

With the cuts going on in the name of efficiency and so-called DEI imperialism it's no surprise science YouTube is in trouble. It's sad.

If you at all understand the progress in the 20th century, you'll know it's the result of a relay race involving both private and public sectors. In the coming week's I'll be talking a lot about "antirival" goods and why we need a better collective understanding of them.

There are always costs @jillL
Either we pay the cost of indemnifying people to be where we need them or we pay the costs of people not being where we need them.

Something similar is true of health care. Unhealthy people don't work as well (among other costs). We either pay the costs of keeping our population healthy or we pay the costs of a less healthy population.

Same for education and training. Either we pay the costs of educating and training our people or we pay the costs of our people not having the knowledge and skills that the nation needs.

Do we @Sandrew ?

Take Lismore in NSW. The town was established at the site of a homestead that had already flooded several times. The location was chosen for economic reasons. The nation (colony of NSW) needed a town there.

Structures generally require approval. The approving authority (government) is therefore responsible. And government is us.

If we need to put people in harm's way, then we have responsibilities to those people.

@Qldaah
I've long thought that insurance is not a natural commercial market. If the nation needs people to take risks, then the nation should indemnify them. People living in the riskiest circumstances are often those least able to afford insurance. Anyone harmed by someone who couldn't afford public liability insurance is disadvantaged.

In short, Insurance should be considered part of the public good.
