Just found out my client contract is unexpectedly ending at the end of this month, and that puts me at risk of a layoff at my consulting firm after that.

So I'm trying to get ahead of things and find a new team to utilize my almost 10 years of experience in Web and software engineering.

**About me:**
🌐 I have professional experience with TypeScript, Vue, Nodejs, Elixir/Phoenix, Ruby/Rails and more. Plus I enjoy exploring a language or framework I've not used before, and I have proven I can ramp up my comprehension quickly.
🧭 I am based in the US Central Timezone (or UTC -5) and am looking for remote roles that work well with that.
👨‍💻 I have worked up and down the stack and am open to a variety of position focuses.

**About my new team:**
🧠 They value competency and critical thinking over specific stack experience, prioritizing open collaboration and knowledge sharing.
🔧 They take standards and best practices seriously, not reaching for the quickest solution for its own sake.
🌎 (ideally) They seek to help solve problems that impact major issues of our time.

**About you:**
👋 You have connections to folks I should talk to, or you *are* someone I should talk to.
‼️ You know of or have seen roles that might be worth looking into.
🔁 You can boost this to try to connect it with folks who might fit one of the first two points 😁

I'm grateful for your input. Thanks y'all.

I started 2025 unemployed and have been looking for work since Jan 1. Figured it couldn't hurt to see if anyone here might know of something.

🌐 I am a UX/UI designer with a passion for crafting easy-to-use interfaces and user-centered digital experiences that help people work better. Committed to delivering impactful visuals that align with brand guidelines and drive business goals.
🧭 Open to in-person/hybrid roles in the #Seattle metro area, or to remote roles in the US. W2 only.
⭐ I value work/life balance, cross-functional collaboration (I play well with engineers!), and projects that drive meaningful and positive impact.

I'm looking to put my seventeen years of computer networking expertise to work! If you know of any relevant opportunities or just want to catch up, please let me know.

🌐 Engineering experience with a broad variety of network types, from hyper-scale cloud providers to small businesses and enterprises
🧭 Open to in-person/hybrid roles in the Seattle metro area, or to remote roles in the US
⭐ I value work/life balance and seeing direct impact from my work

Open for New Opportunities! 🚀

After working as a full-stack developer for 4+ years, I'm now seeking my next role with a focus on front-end development.

What I Bring to the Table:
💻 Front-End Expertise: TypeScript, React.js & Tailwind CSS specialist.
🔄 Adaptable: Comfortable with Angular, Vue, Svelte and various styling approaches.
🧰 Full-Stack Background: Experienced with Ruby on Rails, SQL, and Node.js.
📱 Growth Mindset: Eager to learn and expand into React Native development.
🌏 Remote Worker: Based in UTC+8 timezone, seeking full-time remote opportunities.

Python's __call__ dunder offers a closure alternative. It manages state in a class, callable like a function, opening new code structuring possibilities.

In complex scenarios, __call__ enhances readability and maintainability. Encapsulating logic and data promotes cleaner code, improving clarity and debugging.

For pre-filling arguments, consider __call__ over functools.partial, especially with methods needing internal state. It creates a state-holding object for robust operations.

This is beneficial in large projects with complex logic. Using __call__ improves organization and maintainability, leading to efficient development.

How a Good ATS Resume Helps You Get Hired

Job hunting is like a race. The goal? Getting hired. But before you cross the finish line, you must pass through obstacles—the ATS, recruiters, and other candidates.

A bad resume is like running in heavy boots—slow and unnoticed. A good ATS resume? It’s your jetpack! It uses the right keywords and format to get past filters and in front of hiring managers. Optimize your resume, and unlock new opportunities!

#opentowork Actually, I offer a job search service where I apply for roles on your behalf. I search for high-quality jobs that match your skills and career goals, and I apply to them through company websites and platforms like Indeed.

Let me know if you'd like to move forward!

I've just finished writing up a deep dive into building a Telegram bot with a FastAPI web application, and it was quite the journey into asynchronous Python! 🐍

The project started with a desire to run chatbots across multiple platforms, but quickly evolved into a focused exploration of asyncio. I found myself wrestling with event loops, queues, and the nuances of asyncio.create_task vs. asyncio.to_thread. It became very clear that understanding the difference between concurrency and parallelism is absolutely crucial in this space. Clever scheduling can mitigate blocking, but over-scheduling will inevitably lead to performance issues.

Architectural considerations became a major focus. I learned firsthand that cramming everything into a single process, while tempting, isn't always the best approach. Separating processes for scalability and future enhancements is something I'll definitely keep in mind for future projects.

This project was a great learning experience, and I'm looking forward to applying these lessons to future projects. If you're interested in asyncio, webhooks, or building chatbots, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Board roles - I recently changed my LinkedIn profile to say that I’m Open to Board Roles (linkedin.com/in/kristinehoward/), and a few recruiters picked up on that #opentowork photo frame immediately. No, I’m not looking to go back to work! Still very happily retired. I am specifically only interested in board roles, and there’s no way to flag that without also putting up that photo frame.

Being on a board is something I’ve been thinking about for several years, after a mentor raised it as a potential career path for me. There’s a real lack of tech industry experience and tech skills on my boards, and women are also woefully underrepresented. I have considered doing the AICD course (aicd.com.au/courses-and-progra), but yowza! it’s expensive to do just in the hopes of getting a paid board role someday. I had coffee with a friend recently who’s on several boards, and she advised that the course isn’t needed right away if I start by aiming for non-profit, volunteer roles. And right now, my focus is very much on doing whatever I can to make the world a better place.

If you have no idea what being on a board actually entails – because I certainly didn’t! – Anil Dash has a great article about it (anildash.com/2024/06/20/dash-b). web-goddess.org/archive/55329

I'm really, really, really appreciative of all the lovely comments and offers of help I've received here on Mastodon since I went public about having lost my job.

I've gone ahead and made the inevitable #OpenToWork post on LinkedIn, which details a bit more about my background and the sorts of things I'm looking for. 💻

But to sum it up - something similar to my in-house content/editorial role at the cybersecurity company I was until recently working for would probably be best. Preferably remote - or hybrid if it's here in London. But let's see what we can find, eh?

I was just laid off today so I’m looking for a new software engineering position. I’ve been working in tech since 2015 and doing full-time work for the last six years. Specifically I’ve worked on React, React Native, and backend TypeScript projects for various clients usually in the e-commerce space. I’ve joined existing projects as well as greenfield projects delivering a fully new app for clients.

I’m looking for anything remote or based in Seattle.

It’s a new week in my #JobSearch and I’ve already had an internal corporate #recruiter neglect to call at the time they appointed. They did not answer when I called them a half hour later.

How’s your Monday going?

Update: They emailed to say that a critical meeting was dropped on them and asked if I could talk about a half hour from after this edit. So there’s hope.
