When burned, coal releases more of the main #GreenhouseGas carbon dioxide than any other #FossilFuel. It also emits criteria #pollutants that are blamed for #lung & #heart illnesses. Much of its use has declined on #regulations from #Democrats, including President Joe #Biden.

InstagramHoward G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy Helps Diagnose Lung Cancer Earlier Using a surgical robot to precisely manipulate a fiberoptic bronchoscope was first reported in 2018 by Washington University-St. Louis pulmonologist Alexander Chen MD. The technique permitted examination and biopsy of smaller, more peripheral cancers leading to earlier initiation of therapy. Just published in the journal CHEST is the first large prospective multi-center study of the technique to access its diagnostic utility and safety. Including 715 patients at 21 sites in the US and Hong Kong 88% of whom had lesions in difficult to access outer two-thirds of the lungs, the investigators found a successful lesion localization in up to 94%. The procedure was complication-free in over 96% of cases. This technique is now being used by more clinicians in more centers. A second generation robotic bronchoscope is now available. Robotic bronchoscopy availability is however limited due to the high cost of the equipment. Murgu SD, et al. New discovery could help protect against #influenza

Preclinical trial uncovers how beta-glucan, found in all #fungi, can ‘reprogram’ #immune cells to prevent #lung inflammation

A component found in all fungi may provide a shield against #flu-related lung damage, according to a new study.

A team of scientists led by #MaziarDivangahi, a Professor in #McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Senior Scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill #University Health Centre, demonstrated that beta-glucan, administered to #mice before their exposure to influenza, can reduce lung damage, improve lung function and lower the risk of #illness and #death.

#LungCancer diagnoses on the rise among never-smokers worldwide
#Lung #cancer in people who never smoked cigarettes or tobacco is now 5th highest cause of cancer deaths worldwide,
About 200,000 cases of adenocarcinoma were associated with exposure to #airpollution in 2022, according to IARC study published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal. The largest burden of adenocarcinoma attributable to air pollution was found in east Asia, particularly China, the study found.

The Guardian · Lung cancer diagnoses on the rise among never-smokers worldwideBy Andrew Gregory

Safety first! Was at a friend's place for dinner last night. Dinner burnt in the microwave while we were around the corner in the living room. We smelled smoke, dashed into the kitchen where there was so much smoke you couldn't see across the room. Smoke billowed down the hall and into their bedroom -- but not much made it to the living room. The smoke alarm, located by the living room, never went off.
Friends! Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are near the source of most fires and dangerous smoke -- near the kitchen (and by rooms with fireplaces, and not far from the furnace).
Sure, it might go off once in a while when you're cooking. But the point is for it to go off before things get really bad so you have a chance to deal with it. To be alerted in another room, or to wake you up while you can still escape.
Smoke alone is dangerous and causes the most common injuries from home fires. In this case there was no fire, but really bad levels of smoke --I woke up this morning still a bit congested.
And test those alarms a couple times a year to make sure the battery. etc. is still good.
UPDATE. Sources added. Note the section about the dangers of burning microwave popcorn.
