The film finds Almeyer, a disillusioned colonialist deep in Malaysian jungle living w/his half-breed daughter, Nina. Still dreaming of making it big w/his shady business partner/former captain Linguard, while boozing & being nostalgic about great Europe. In the film's stunning opening, a man croons an Elvis song at an outdoor club. As he gets stabbed, Nina takes the stage & sings.
