@jmac In fairness, Ron Edwards was one of the original Edgelords, even at the time. At some point, you may want to look through discussions on the Forge of the period between him and me and several other members of what evolved into the Story Games community, which gave rise to so much of modern game design.

He certainly wasn't alone in that, mind you. Breaking the boundaries and being transgressive was pretty much de rigueur for some of us. But everybody had a different idea of what proper transgression was.

If you get the opportunity, sit down and play Sorcerer with some other people as written in the book. It is shockingly functional and the meta-commentary about games and game design is as applicable today as it ever was, perhaps more so given that a chunk of what became of the SG community became what they hated most in terms of allowing external social pressure to dictate what they create.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

A dear old friend will be visiting in September. I asked him what he’d like to play while here and he would love a Mage game for old times sake.

Now I have to figure out the mages of Portland and what weirdness will be afoot.

Also I realized there are way more books for Mage20 than I realized.

@antiqui I've played the murder mystery A Weekend in the Country a bunch of times and had a lot of fun. I've also enjoyed the Foretold games by @jamesmullen (covering several genres), which I helped playtest. Beak, Feather, and Bone is more about worldbuilding than individual characters, but I like it too.

Those are all on itch.io. Here are links to some of my session reports so you can get a feel for a few.

Dicey Stories · Murder in the Countryside : Dicey StoriesLord Adler has been found dead at his country estate. Which of the guests could have done it? Good thing a detective was among those present...

Today on the NSR discord (with @lumpley ) we discovered that “fiction first” doesn’t come from Apocalypse World. At least, not directly. It seems to have entered the discussion around AW, particularly we think from people applying the MC principle “make a move, but don’t speak its name” to PCs.

We think the first time “fiction first” appeared in a game was Dungeon World.

I definitely think it’s worth re-reading the actual MC principles again.

Been helping proofread City of Masks, jim’s long overdue mystery Kickstarter project. I think it’s the best setting he’s ever created. It makes me want to LARP again, it would be a great setting for one.

A mysterious city cut off from everything where the inhabitants all wear masks. The status quo hasn’t changed in centuries. But of course the PCs might think they can change that.
