“This place has made me shine again in a certain way,” says Valeria Barbi, an environmental journalist and naturalist.

“I was a little bit overwhelmed about the [global] ecological situation. But these places make me think we can do something, that best practices really exist.”

The Guardian · ‘We made everything bear-proof’: the Italian village that learned to love its bearsBy Phoebe Weston

"Insight into the minds and lives of the #animals that have learned how to live around us could help us learn to be better neighbors to them.

"And accepting peaceful #coexistence as a shared responsibility might even help us be better neighbors to other people as well."

“Rain Falling from the Roof,” composed by and performed with my dear friend Wu Tong 吳彤. - Yo-Yo Ma

"There is a story from the Northern Song Dynasty, where a novice monk asks a renowned Zen master about the meaning of Buddhism. The master points to the raindrops falling from the eaves of a roof. The novice monk, after being perplexed for a long time, suddenly experiences an epiphany.
It was during a rainstorm that I first read this story. At that time, the entirety of humankind was dealing with the trials of the coronavirus pandemic. Upon hearing the sound of the falling raindrops, I was reminded that people depend upon peaceful coexistence with each other and with Mother Nature to live in true harmony. No one exists in isolation.”

"Chinese and Indigenous communities have shared histories. We faced hardships together while mining for gold in the British Columbia gold rush and experiencing the rugged Canadian weather and terrain.

There are many graves on First Nations territories when Chinese people died from the flu and from the building of the railway, crushed by landslides, collapsing tunnels and premature blastings (Mittelstedt, 2014). The First Nations communities took in the Chinese railroad workers and care for their grave sites to this day (Mittelstedt, 2014). We enjoyed economic success and partnerships that were respectful and mutually beneficial (Ma, 2012). Chinese people leased lands (on First Nations) to farm and then hired Indigenous people to help farm the land (Mathur et al., 2011, p. 74). The Chinese built elaborate gold-mining operations among First Nations communities and perhaps most importantly our communities intermingled and there were many marriages between Chinese men and Indigenous women. In 1891, 98% of Chinese people in Canada lived in British Columbia (Barman, 2013, p. 1), which explains why there are such intimate ties between Chinese people and our First Nations communities in British Columbia. Unsurprisingly, one in six Chinese men created a family with a local Indigenous woman (Barman, 2013, p. 1)."

NatureBeyond a single pole: exploring the nuanced coexistence of scientific elitism and populism in China - Humanities and Social Sciences CommunicationsThe rise of scientific populism has become a global issue, but research on the coexistence of scientific elitism and scientific populism, especially in East Asian societies, is still limited. Based on a large-scale online survey conducted in the Chinese mainland in 2023 (N = 2922), this study explores the tendencies towards scientific elitism, scientific populism, and scientific pluralism among different groups in Chinese society. The results show that Chinese women tend to have a more conservative view of scientists, with no clear inclination towards elitism or populism. People with middle income and education levels show a dual tendency, supporting both elitist views and populism, and even leaning towards pluralistic attitudes. The “initial construction generation,” has a more negative view of scientific elitism and tends towards extreme populism, while the “new century generation” shows less deference for elitism and a stronger populist tendency. The study also finds that the interaction between post-materialist values and interest in science significantly shapes attitudes towards scientists. Social media, especially short-video platforms, plays an important role in promoting scientific populism and its more extreme forms. This study emphasizes the need to account for the diversity and complexity of attitudes across different social groups when developing science communication strategies.

Dear _ ,

To bring my vision of posthuman #cosmopolitanism to life, I can: celebrate the #coexistence of humans, non-humans, & nature in urban spaces; support initiatives 🌱 for rooftop gardens & community green spaces; 🌳 advocate for #ecological urban planning & wildlife corridors 🦇🐦; promote technologies that enhance interspecies #communication 🤖💬; & integrate multi-species habitats into this city, to create a safer, more inclusive #society, where all kinds of creatures can survive together 🌍💚.

Osa, (I'm making an assumption in using that name pls forgive me if I'm wrong) you are spot on!

As long as #humanity wants an #other to blame and vilify instead of a unified view of "us" as humanity all with a common past & future we will have these nightmares.

#theother is an excuse for failure & a place to lay blame. Human #coexistence is a destination we could...SHOULD embrace.

"How" is of course historically hard but it remains a must if we are to survive.

🔍 Through the analysis of a thorough survey proposed to residents and visitors, we could identify the most #meaningfulplaces, and position there some totems.

🌱 The totems needed to be representative of specific aspects and topics of the #territorialidentity of Marghera. Local community experts worked to identify those topics, analysing those mentioned (once again) in the survey. It was amazing to find hints about #biodiversity, #history, the #fivesenses, #coexistence, #folkloricspirit, #belonging and much more.

🔗 It became apparent that walking from one totem to another could represent a valuable way to #explore and #connect physically and emotionally with the territory.

In the next post, I will dive into the nature of the totems and how they can showcase and represent Marghera authentically.

Fed Coyote

A recent study of San Francisco Coyotes showed that they're eating more human food than natural prey. One thing I noticed in the study was a high occurrence of menhaden, commonly used in pet food. That could come from food left for feral cat colonies, food for outdoor pets, or people feeding Coyotes pet food. The most common protein was chicken, like this Coyote is eating.

I've photographed this Coyote regularly. While it let me get closer than non-urban Coyotes, it had been skittish […]
