Chemtrails conspiracy theories are back, with alarming influence! This article examines the persistence of these beliefs among MAGA and MAHA supporters who mistake jet contrails for chemical spraying. Misinformation is even shaping legislation in places like Alabama and Florida. Prominent figures like RFK Jr. perpetuate these myths, despite evidence showing no actual spraying for weather control. Explore the full implications [here](crooksandliars.com/2025/03/mag). #Chemtrails #MAGA #ConspiracyTheories #Misinformation

@leighms

I heard that it was quite a few U.S.A. states that had things like this in the works.

The Tennessee one bans sunshades, too.

The Kentucky one apparently died in committee but would have banned lightning rods. And wildfire suppression, even by releasing water. And crop spraying of fertilizers that affect soil.

It makes you wonder about the provision talking about "machines that mimic human intelligence". Are we talking about the intelligence of Kentucky legislators? (-:

@leighms

I've just read the Bill.

flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2025

There are some amusing things about it.

It doesn't specifically say aeroplanes. As written, it extends to banning people putting up sunshades on Florida beaches.

("[…] an apparatus into the atmosphere […] for the express purpose of affecting […] intensity of sunlight")

A fine of $100,000 per beachgoer is probably a nice little earner for Florida.

Do you think that there are sunshades at Mar-A-Lago? (-:

@leighms

I should have taken greater note of whoever it was who said, a while ago now, that xe agreed with the #chemtrails nutters that aeroplanes affect the weather and leave trails of chemicals, but xe calls them anthropogenic climate change caused by burning fossil fuels, and "water".

Apparently the chemtrails nutters couldn't cope with being agreed with and having it pointed out that they make an excellent case for banning fossil fuels.

I wonder who the first environmentalist will be who will look at the exact wording of the legislation and wonder whether it can be used to take some action against climate change.

As a member of a few science related Facebook groups, I've found a possible way to shut down people who want to argue about obvious conspiracy theories like #chemtrails.
I just ask them to give me a reason I should believe in their conspiracy. And then insist they answer that question fully. Also, asking if the poster is trolling the group or posted the conspiracy as a joke kind of seals the deal ... sometimes.
