letterboxd.comA ★★ review of Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)I said that the original Dr. Phibes felt like the adaptation of some period pulp series you never heard of, this feels like the adaptation of some early filler episode from before they’d really worked out the formula. The type of story that’s pretty underwhelming on its own but that fans care about because it introduces something that becomes important later on. As for the movie itself there are a lot of familiar faces, I enjoy the artificiality of many of the Phibes centric sets and the characters needless theatricality. There isn't (it was a bad joke) though many consider 'Theatre of Blood' to be a spiritual successor.
