The Failed Promise of Independent Election Mapmaking
==
In Washington and other states, independent redistricting commissions have fallen prey to partisanship, just like the legislative bodies they were meant to replace.

@ProPublica Our proposed Ohio Redistricting commission will have 15 members, chosen by lottery after recommendation from retired judges, cannot have history of political office or be a former staffer.

@mmynatt @ProPublica I'm very skeptical of most redistricting committees as it's a prime target for partisan manipulation, but darn.

This is by far one of the best methods I've heard so far.

@hlfshell @ProPublica We studied all the others, and tried to build in failsafe methods. The initiative is headed by a former Ohio SC Justice (R) and many others. We are on our way, getting lots of signatures, building on our protect choice initiative with thousands of volunteers.

@mmynatt @ProPublica Thanks for the hard work! I look forward to seeing how this pans out.

I'm guessing straight algorithmic approaches are a no-go in public discourse?

Mary trying to cope

@ProPublica @hlfshell go to citizensnotpoliticians.org . We have relied on Dave’s Redistricting for evaluating maps in the past, the commission will hire experts and have public meetings well in advance of adoption by the commission, unlike the last go-round.
