I am watching with grave concern over the actions of the South Korean president to declare martial law, all because the opposition has blocked his agenda and impeached his cabinet.
Democracy is under assault across much of the world. We must be on highest guard here as well as Trump takes office.
That seems indeed the most probable cause of current events. His arguments seem a bit more far-fetched and opportunistic.
@georgetakei This president sounds like a desperate man trying everything in the last minute. A few of those around today in power sadly....
Let's hope we are not facing 'Dark Ages' again!
@georgetakei the rhetoric used is worrying to me. It’s borrowing from playbooks I don’t like seeing used.
@georgetakei
Thanks for this interpretation. I'd just read the CNN article about it, and it left me at least as ignorant as before I read it.
@georgetakei politics suck so hard, and it's mainly because of greedy people that want power -.-
@georgetakei Events are moving fast; I think the martial law is no longer in effect.
@georgetakei I am so proud of the South Korean National Assembly and Government today. I only wish the United States had the same fortitude. Instead they chose to elect the cheeto again.
I am sad to be an American and disappointed / disgusted with my fellow Americans.
@georgetakei it’s like going back in a time machine that undoes everything we thought was settled. I expect China will be invading Vietnam any day now.
@georgetakei Germany is currently politically paralized, France is likely to be after tomorrow... A rather concerning confluence of circumstances has been brewing... :-/
@georgetakei
How the South Korean military responds to the vote in parliament could very well determine the strength of democracy internationally.
History repeats … batten down the hatches, we’re in for a bumpy ride.
@georgetakei No so-called president should have that power, without agreement of a parliament.
@georgetakei he has the White House, both chambers of Congress and an extreme far right Supreme Court. We are fucked.
@georgetakei
South Korean parliment denies martial law application
>" National Assembly chamber have just recently voted unanimously to block the president’s declaration of martial law. "
>" it was reported that some troops were beginning to withdraw... "

Sadly we missed our chance as millions of Americans refused to get off their butts and vote. Ironically they’ll be first and loudest to wail when Trump dismantles each cornerstone of American democracy.
Wait, they didn't impose martial law because Kim Jong Un threatened to give a nucleate bomb?
@georgetakei truly frightened to see how connected the world is.
It would appear that the Korean parliament unilaterally voted to block martial law. Apparently this martial law decree from the president came as a surprise to even his own party, who denounced it.
Question is now: does the army support him? If so, South Koreans are in for a fight.
If not, what the hell was he thinking because he's bound to be impeached and arrested.
To our American friends, hate to say it, Trump is placing his people in key positions.
Stay Vigilant!
