We've all had a day or two to process what the Supreme Court just did.
The battle for our country and for the rule of law, not of oligarchs, lies ahead of us. Let us recommit to it now, and with grave determination resolve to turn this tide back in 2024.
I am ready. Are you?
@georgetakei@universeodon.com I'm in Let's make it happen
@georgetakei I’m ready! And making a major announcement soon. We need bold action, and we need to act now.
@QasimRashid @georgetakei Hear hear. We also need sustained action. Conservatives have been able to accomplish what they have because they have been working on this for YEARS, rather surreptitiously, with the help of rich donors and orgs like the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation to influence local, state, and national politics. Dems need something similar, not to indoctrinate but to guard democracy against theocracy. This requires sustained involvement.
@QasimRashid @georgetakei How can we help?
@dobetterinstitute @QasimRashid @georgetakei donating to Democracy Docket is a good start. They're fighting the good fight to make sure we can all vote.
@georgetakei let’s do it!
@georgetakei I'm always with you.
@georgetakei I've been ready for quite sometime. Problem is I live in AL where Dems fight each other so Republicans get little competition. There are lots like me in other Red states that would like to know how to help elsewhere but there's little organization of us- I happen to be a moderate.
@angelamorgan dems fighting each other on a national scale is what led us to this place. @georgetakei
@angelamorgan @georgetakei I rather think this is also part of the republican plan.
@georgetakei I am so sick and tired of the Democrats continuously being reactionary to the repubs systematic removal of the nation’s rights and liberties. It’s time to go on the offense and hard with it if we truly desire a land of the free.
Take the fight to the voting booth.
Take it to the school boards.
Take it to the courts.
Take it to the streets.
@georgetakei I’m always ready. The problem is the lies can be quite effective for many people especially when spoken by religious leaders. How can we dispel these untruths that undermine our democracy?
@georgetakei as a non- American with a keen interest in US politics, can someone please explain what the ideal scenario is, going forward? The justices have life time appointments- what can be done about them?
We are suffering from some structural problems in our system implemented about a century ago.
1) putting a cap on the size of the House of Representatives tilts power and breaks the balance of the original design. Lifting that cap and balancing state representation by population would reduce the power of the radical minority trying to control our system. This is a simple piece of legislation. It would allow for other reforms to happen.
2) the court’s make up was based on one justice per circuit court. There used to be nine - now there are thirteen. Expanding the court to 13 would result in a rebalance and make capture by one faction more difficult. This legislation is currently being debated.
3) Ethic rules for justices and mechanisms to enforce them (short of impeachment) would reign in the clear influence peddling that has lead to the recent appointments and decisions.
@icastico @georgetakei thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it.
@georgetakei Um, you won in 2020 already.
@georgetakei we should have an election before the election and make sure we have candidates that represent us.
US Politics
@georgetakei Republicans have shown they are willing to burn it all down (almost literally) in order to gain power, catering to their most extreme right-wing members. Democrats aren't perfect by any stretch, but they focus on strengthening and lifting people up, rather than trying to keep them down
US Politics
@rmquist @georgetakei I find it hard to think of something less uplifting than prioritizing appearance of 2019 over basic health care standards in medical settings.
And its not uplifting that democrats endorsed police brutality over black lives matter.
@georgetakei watching from mortified. Unless they expand the court to balance the power how can this issue go away. It’s going all Handmaids tale there.
@georgetakei I'm in full agreement with you, sir. Any guesses as to how many years it will take to repair the damage these ignoramuses caused? Even with full public, congressional and legal support, I see decades of work ahead.
@georgetakei I’m not sure what happened. Can I get an ELI5?
@georgetakei The rule of law is the rule of oligarchs. That's what liberalism is. That's what American institutions were always meant to be.
@georgetakei starting today, everyone should ask every local business everytime we visit, what their stance is on serving everyone in the public before spending any money. We should vote and mobilize, absolutely, but with laws changed and everything in flux, we can also stand up each day and only support small/local businesses that also support us! Who knew that they could refuse us?? Well we can also refuse them! We will not go back into hiding because they are uncomfortable
@rogrbond @georgetakei Sadly, people lie, especially for money...
@georgetakei @rogrbond you can use this app to just scan a barcode and it will tell you who the corporation donates to
There needs to be 13 seats on the SCotUS. There's 13 circuits now.
My worry is that if the Democrats add the extra seats and sit 4 more justices, then Republicans will cry and say they are adding more - but their voters won't understand the reasons why there are 13 seats and they'll just be happy that they're "'screwin' the libs!".
Ultimately, people need to vote. I think the next 2 or 3 elections are going to shape the future of the USA.
@georgetakei It's time for the regressive #FederalistSociety fascists on the #Roberts court to take their places on the dustbin of history.
Toss them out! #TossThemOut
I’m ready to encourage EVERYONE to get involved in
WORKING TO GET OUT THE VOTE.
Since 1904, voter turnout has been UNDER 67%.
Personal engagement, donations, working with activist groups, volunteering locally, statewide & nationally, can all make the difference to GOTV.
Our choice has come down to Democracy or Fascism.
WORK TO GET OUT THE BLUE VOTE!
@georgetakei Not with FAIL #Democrats (who let this happen)
@georgetakei I an ready, too
@georgetakei what can we do
@georgetakei so you think the supreme court is biased?
@georgetakei depends on whether voting is accessible to me.
Its not especially encouraging that democrats chose to ignore the fact that air quality control measures that mitigate airborne pathogens are REQUIRED for a public space to be accessible to high risk individuals.
Inaccessible voting is form if voter suppression. If we had maintained mitigation
Or even JUST had it in November.
We might have had those 500 votes. More maybe.
@georgetakei #oregon Will have a vote on #rcv in 2024. Hopefully this passes so we can vote on the people we want.
@georgetakei the fact they lied to the highest judicial institution is a signal that the Supreme Court is no more than a far-rights extremists machine, ready to rule based on fiction.
This should spark violence to be frank. Not just “let’s just vote better”.
@georgetakei No, I am not ready. I am exhausted. I feel like I have been fighting since the Vietnam war for the same basic rights. So, if someone can just give me simple-to-follow-instructions on what I need to do now I would be ever grateful. There is no choice but to keep going, but really sick of it. (I do love your rallying cry Mr. Takei , I'll do my best)
@georgetakei Here is DemCast's premade social media about the SCOTUS decisions https://share.demcastusa.com/campaign/D21B74C7-D857-41E6-909E-D50F27D3868E
@georgetakei I'm ready and I'm starting by working with DemCast.com/Join to amplify Democratic voices and messages on my social media.
@georgetakei
In France, they've had three days of protests over one bad police shooting.
In the US they've stripped away equal rights in every direction this year while strengthening corporations and the GOP, and there are no protests at all. The US is in deep trouble and you guys keep talking about showing up at the next election. Too late.
@georgetakei tbh, I’m still oscillating between the crippling sadness and murderous rage stages of grief.
I plan on channeling my rage into fighting christofascist republicans, but I’m still disoriented and depressed, and I don’t really know all the concrete steps I need to take to move forward.
@georgetakei You bet, George!
@georgetakei I have a feeling you’re not going to like that rule of law part, I know a ton of people of color & poor people who sure as hell don’t. A lot of women in states where they might die because of anti abortion laws might not be big fans of that rule of law.
The courts are stacked our law enforcement agencies are riddled with MAGA
Yeah that rule of law thing might not work out
@georgetakei
And just when I had begun to believe that America, we all looked up to, had embraced the spirit of inclusivity ... so sad
@georgetakei
Absolutely !!!
@georgetakei Theocrats are a huge issue too. They don’t want any separation of church and state they want the church to rule. The Supreme Court is obliging them. It’s why we wanted to sever ties with England to begin with.
@georgetakei Let's go French on them!
