Breaking Taps

Ever wonder about how they cram a microphone into an earbud?

Well, I have 😅

So I carved up a cheap pair of earbuds to take a look at the MEMs mic inside. They are pretty cool bits of technology!

@breakingtaps That's some very pleasing-to-look-at footage. Nice one! Will bookmark this for when I have to explain "mems microphone" to someone.

@breakingtaps

What I don't understand is how the mic can be so good when it's placed near your ear. You'd never point any other microphone there. There's no other microphone that would sound best placed by the ear rather than near, or pointed at, the mouth, even at an angle. These things are like "Mouth? Meh."

@kingkaufman Yeah honestly that part is dark magic to me too. My studio mics can do an ok job "off-axis" but not amazing, and I'd expect worse performance from something so small.

It's a mystery!

@breakingtaps and in a year or two you can break down MEMS speakers as well :)

@RichiH Oh wow, I thought this was a joke at first but MEMS speakers do exist! Fascinating!

@breakingtaps "exist" is still kind of a big word and they can't do bass yet, but... soon...
