George Takei :verified: 🏳️‍🌈🖖🏽

We in the U.S. could learn a thing or two.

@georgetakei we need to bring back tar and feathering.

@georgetakei France also knew how to handle “kings” 🤨😀

@WiteWulf @georgetakei They even invented a machine for that.

@georgetakei
She's also in jail for 4 years.

@georgetakei @draken Not quite, 2 years suspended, and 2 under house arrest.

@draken @georgetakei 0 , 2 years with a tracker…

@georgetakei Jailing fascists is one way to deal with them. And it is of course more civilized ...

@andreas_heitmann @georgetakei
To be honest I'd more and more prefer to be a little bit more uncivilized to/with them! 🤷🏼‍♂️ 🤬

@georgetakei The best part is how she supported the law to disqualify from office anyone convicted of misusing public funds, and is now complaining about it being enforced against her

@georgetakei

But if you don't punt critical decisions to the electorate, how will Milquetoast politicians avoid controversial policies?

Ugh, Britain and the US have the same neoliberal hellscape because of shit like this.

@georgetakei
Don't go so quick, she can still do an appeal, many right senators and deputies in France plan to change the law to let her running for the 2027 elections, at least her and Sarkozy got 2 years with a beautiful electronic neckless,
with any luck Sarkozy could even taste his own shit by getting 7 years in a jail.

And by the way I am not so sure that we would like in France to go back to the "terror" and the guillotines.

@georgetakei
And our press in Germany like this: "No, you can't do that. She is the most popular politician in France. This is undemocratic."

The press capitulates to fascism before it has even begun.

@georgetakei more interesting to see, yet entirely predictable, was the people condemning the ruling. None of whom have ever had any of their political opponents jailed or worse. Not once. Ever. Of course.

@georgetakei The problem is that unless the French constitution specifically prohibits a felon from running for office, the ban is judicial over-reach and threatens the rule of law's being corrupted for political purposes. You know, like it's done in the US.

@Lizburton I think it's not a ban on felons running for office, but a ban on people convicted of misusing public funds from running for office.

Which, honestly, makes sense. If you betrayed the public's trust while in a position of power, why should you get another chance to do it again?

@georgetakei

@georgetakei I was really hoping they would also send her to Le Penitentiary.

@georgetakei i used to be fascinated by how france has like eight billion laws, most of which are just performative, and how people in general do what the F they want as long as cops aren’t watching them. And cops would ignore most of those laws … unless they wanted to take someone down a peg or two.

I think this is what happened with Le Pen. Given the situation in washington that is forcing france to be the nuclear umbrella for the continent, they had to take the putin marionette out of play

@georgetakei Since she's been convicted, she has been given prime time on national television to explain "how the judicial system is corrupt and banning her from the future election is unfair". So justice currently works better, true, but the direction we're heading is not a good one.

@georgetakei The american right is outraged because the notion of crimes having consequences is completely alien to them. Meanwhile most of europe are just pointing and laughing at her, well, they're making gestures with their fingers anyway.

@georgetakei If American democracy survives, it's going to have to get much, much more aggressive at defending itself.
