Maybe start by not holding such prejudice in your heart.
@georgetakei apparently he sold out when we weren’t looking
@georgetakei yes....very disappointed in him
@georgetakei Oh dear, another old rocker with anti-trans comments? Alice Cooper made some statements last week. Who will we hear from next?
I like Peter Green's original version of Black Magic Woman better anyway.
@georgetakei Sadly, he is voicing the same as many, do it in the closet, like it was something one should have to be ashamed.
But i have high hopes for the new generations, that they will not even understand why ones needs to hide at all.
"I will now pursue this goal to be happy and have fun, and for everyone to believe what they want and follow in your hearts without fear. It takes courage to grow and glow in the light that you are and to be true, genuine, and authentic."
It sounds like Carlos had a learning moment while standing in the spotlight...thats tough. His apology does not sound trite, or phoned in to me. I'm definitely not apologizing, or excusing his moment of shame, but we have to allow room to grow.
@Whit_justWhit @georgetakei Well said. Seems like he realized he said something hurtful and is genuinely remorseful. He can't change overnight, but recognizing how he's wrong and being willing to change is the first step.
@riquisimo @georgetakei
100% It's really easy to become jaded to the media manager directed apologies these days, but it's important to allow room for genuine growth. Doubting sincerity is fair theses days, but it's important to leave enough doubt, to allow room for sincere growth. I genuinely believe that enemies become allies every day. Accepting, and allowing for this reality is the only way oppressed people become free. (No doubt, recognizing bullshit media statements is important too)
@riquisimo @georgetakei
I understand that when I give someone the benefit of my doubt, my trust, I'm putting a piece of myself on the line. If they prove me wrong in the future, they cut a piece of myself, my confidence in my own understanding from me, they literally make me less. As time goes by, there is less and less of me I'm willing to sacrifice in believing in another.
Easy to be catty. Trust...belief in ones own judgement....tough
@Whit_justWhit @georgetakei it's important to give people the chance to better themselves. If they squander that chance, forget 'em. But if they're sincerely trying, I personally would like to give them a chance.
I can't speak for everyone and the severity and context of the mistake matters, of course.
Anyway: shame on him, he feels shame and apologies, we all move on. If he does it again then he didn't learn and it'll be harder to trust him again.
@georgetakei I’ve seen too many celebrities apologize after getting called out to believe it’s sincere. I just hope he’s learned more than to be careful about what he says.
@georgetakei “I support you”, simple words. Say it out loud, when you say them, they magically give you a sense of freedom. Kinda weird how that works.
People, it is all just this simple.
YOU ONLY GET TO CHOOSE FOR YOU.
That is all. You do not get to choose for anyone else. You do not get to say what another person gets to choose.
YOU ARE NOT THE BOSS OF ANYONE BUT YOURSELF.
You do not get privileged information about others that no one else gets because somehow you feel you are a superior being, you are NOT.
Each one of us gets to chose for ONE. Y o u r s e l f.
If you are pretending that you get to choose for others, WE ARE GOING TO FIGHT YOU because your thought that you get to choose for others, IMPERILS OUR ABILITY TO RETAIN OUR CHOICE FOR OURSELVES.
Stop it.
YOU ONLY GET TO CHOOSE FOR YOU.
End rant.
@LaNaehForaday @georgetakei It SEEMS simple doesn't it... yet a shiton of people simply do. not. get. that.
@LaNaehForaday @georgetakei yes, you choose for you, but your choice impacts the choice of others. We are not islands. We are connected.
@LaNaehForaday @georgetakei Unless you’re rich.
@georgetakei Apparently forgot his own struggle with Mexican prejudices
@georgetakei I don't "understand" trans. But I also know it is not for me to understand it. I don't "understand" what it really means to be Black either. I do know from watching real life, that some people hate other people because of who they are. I do know that this is wrong. That is all I need to understand.
@georgetakei he also deleted his apology per Breitbart reporting
@georgetakei it might be time to find a different way to embed tweets into an article.
Maybe just quote the text ( ..blala, as user @ someone said on X: "<quote>")
Or put in a screenshot.
My phone just shows empty space where the tweets would be, but also, who knows how long twitter still exists and those tweets remain readable?
@georgetakei I have a Carlos story, but I think I'll keep it to myself in this forum. Suffice to say he's had less-than-stellar moments, as we all have. Bigotry is learned. I'd like to think that this is also a learning experience, and that he will extend it to positive acts on behalf of those his rant offended.
