George Takei :verified: 🏳️‍🌈🖖🏽

Despite their protestations to the contrary, No Labels is threatening to hand the 2024 election to Trump. Here's more on the movement and how folks are fighting back: thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p

@georgetakei Anyone followed the money on this? Doesn’t it smack of cowardly republican backers trying to find a way to keep republicans in power (without being seen as running against trump in the primary)?

@georgetakei: Whoever you vote for the government always gets in

@georgetakei Attention whores gotta whore for that sweet sweet attention.

@georgetakei The #Republican in #Democrat ’s clothing known as #Manchin seems to be supportive of them and won’t rule out a run with that party, so yeah. #ThirdParty candidates have no place in our current political system unless or until we switch to #RankedChoiceBalloting or similar. That’s the sad truth. #Politics #Elections. cnn.com/2023/07/12/politics/jo

@georgetakei My question: Would grey walls matter? Would this be a topic at the #bbqBeerCooler or this November at Thanksgiving?

@georgetakei then maybe don't present a Democrat. They are too mid to be representative of the opposition. You need a real leftist candidate, not a company backed falsely socially concerned candidate.

@mehdi_benadel @georgetakei If leftists can't win primaries, how do you think they're going to win a general?

@mehdi_benadel @georgetakei "Let" in what way? Surely you're not going to parrot Russian propaganda about stolen elections, right?

@textualdeviance @georgetakei 🤨 you know there's a spectrum of thoughts between russian propaganda and US bipartisanship?

@mehdi_benadel That didn't answer my question. Who do you think is preventing lefty candidates from winning primaries and how? Details, please.

@textualdeviance your system and libertarian culture. You dismiss social politics as "communist and therefore bad" because your notion of fair is Christian. "Let the bully do harm, they will get punished one way or another (e.g. by fate/God or in the afterlife)". Well good luck with that.

@textualdeviance Blocking the elections to two parties is a false choice forcing you to never think about alternatives. It's a game capitalists have been playing for a while, telling you they offer you choice when they only offer you what they think is good (most of the time because it's good for them).

@textualdeviance And your election culture is contaminating the rest of the World, pushing France for instance into "either neoliberals or fascists" when they are actually to faces of the same coins : bullies that want a hierarchical order of classes.

@mehdi_benadel So in other words, you're just making shit up because you don't live here and don't understand how it works. Our system is fucked up, yes but that's a structural thing that we can't fix because we simply don't have the votes to do so. We are under minority rule because we don't have a super majority to fix it. That's not malfeasance. It's just numbers. And lefty candidates can't fix that any more than anyone else can.

@mehdi_benadel If you really want to know how America could work if we actually had the numbers for Democrats to be in charge, look at what individual states do when they have Democrat majorities in their state government. Here in WA, for instance, we finally flipped our state Senate in 2017, and since then we've done all sorts of progressive stuff like paid family leave and long-term care. But we can't do that nationwide because of the disproportionate représentation Republicans have.

@mehdi_benadel If you know of a way we can completely restructure our system of government without having a 65% majority in the Senate, by all means, let us know. But even if the entire Democrat contingent was far left, they still wouldn't have the power to override the minority rule that Republicans have.

@georgetakei Until the bulk of the country uses instant-runoff/ranked-choice voting, third-party candidates are simply spoilers.

If we want to nurture and support new political parties, we must first work to reform our voting system.

@samalone @georgetakei Did you miss the memo? GOP has created a new political party: TRUMP aka Oligarchs.

And they're reforming our voting system, alright. Pretty soon they'll just install a skin color scanner at the polls and you better not have a tan if you want to vote.

Until we get a super majority Democratic Congress and president, there will be no voting system reform. No Civil Rights, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, or any other rights but White Nationalists racist rights. See #SCOTUS

@georgetakei It's backed by billionaire donors, same ones who bought the SCOTUS and support Trump.

Of course it is. The open greed of "Senator For Sale" Sinema, Manchin, and now "NOT A DEMOCRAT" RFKJr. is sickening, considering the stakes: DEMOCRACY FOR SALE should be tattooed on their foreheads.

Good reporting on No Label's billionaire backers, BUT it's not to hurt Trump: au contraire.

More Perfect UnionThe 'No Labels' Third Party Bid That Could Sabotage Trump and BidenWe dug into the political organization "No Labels", and found a whole lot of billionaires with a history of opposing democracy.

@georgetakei Infection point. Great numbers realize change is good, builds, celebrates life, looks to a future through gratitude. Across our world, people moved out of their comfort zones, positive and healthy, and know true faith. The world over, Russia, China, Iran... folks that follow Trump are the last to embrace true happiness. A happiness as God/Gods intended. Don't let their fear win. Help them shed their oppressive fear. Adopt a healthy fear, celebrate culture, diversity in all colors.

@georgetakei If the democratic party is that worried Biden will lose they should nominate someone progressive and actually win the election.

@georgetakei Anyone truly in favor of a viable 3rd party should be spending their efforts advocating for rank voting, and only afterward run 3rd party candidates. That would actually enfranchize people dissatisfied with the status quo, and have lasting effects beyond one election. Rank Voting should be democrats' rallying cry because, even if it means they lose an election or 2, the winner would likely share Dmocratic ideals - most people are more progressive than regressive/"Conservative".

@georgetakei This is exactly why we are always stuck with 'pick the lesser evil'.

@georgetakei Since both parties are screaming about how bad the other one is, I've ceased supporting those connected political parties, and vote 3rd party. There are about a dozen or so, registered political parties in the country, you know. I'm done trying to keep up with all of this circular logic, and unfocused hate.
Out country is falling apart from the inside (didn't Kruschev mention this?) while the people responsible do squat. I'm done.
