Sports gambling is a plague on American society but I hadn't considered this particularly ghoulish aspect of why it's a plague:

@SuneAuken @cryptadamist Yeah, unfortunately this pattern is well-established. Doesn’t require gambling, intense fandom of a sports team is enough.
