This is a wild news conference!

Canadian Prime Minister Carney’s first foreign meeting is with French President Macron.

Traditionally, the first meeting would be with USA or UK. But now his first meeting is with France.

Symbolically, this represents a big re-alignment geo-politically. And if you hear Macron’s words, you’ll understand exactly what this means: he says Canada and France have a shared cultural heritage and values.

But also, unlike Trudeau, Carney has an Anglophone heritage. Not Francophone. Yet here, he primarily speaks French in this news conference. Because the emphasis here is that French is a core element of Canadian identity.

What does this mean? Already, Canadian media are calling France—not USA—Canada’s closest ally. This has never happened in my lifetime.

@atomicpoet I don’t claim to be any kind of expert but I have serious concerns about Starmer. The UK Foreign Secretary was just interviewed on CBC Radio and was downright evasive when asked about the “annexation“ issue.

@StaceyCornelius @atomicpoet post-BREXIT, the UK has been desperate to gain access to the US market. It appears easier for the Brits to go cap in hand to the Americans than it is to admit to the Europeans that they actually needed the EU market.

Starmer campaigned to stay in the EU and most British people think Brexit was a mistake.

Yes, Starmer was anti Brexit, as was Carney.

Suggesting that Starmer is being non-confrontational with Trump because of Brexit strikes me as ludicrous, but some people perceive everything to be about Brexit.

It appears that Starmer is being mature and responsible when conducting international diplomacy with someone who has Narcissistic personality disorder.

Unlike nobodies such as ourselves, Starmer ranting about Trump as we do on social media would have negative consequences for his nation and what remains of the Western alliance.

One of the qualities of being “Diplomatic” is being tactful, something that Starmer has the maturity to display.

In comparison Johnson was criticised for his lack of tact whilst a journalist (something that seems harsh as it was before he became a politician) whilst Ed Davey is shooting his mouth off like a gobby teenager yet isn’t critised🤷‍♂️
