Cassana

According to some, is a hotspot of the most talented guitarists around. I agree, but I freely admit I've been biased for a long long time now.
This is Fanta Bourama by Djelimady Tounkara. Considering the above statement, he's mixing in so many styles in this, from to jeli ngoni-innspired melodies to chromaticism, with immaculate technique and flair, and he makes it all sound effortless. He used to be in the legendary Rail Band before going solo, and is rightfully considered an African hero. Though not as famous—globally-speaking—as Ali Farka Touré (who occasionally played with the Rail Band’s competition, Les Ambassadeurs), he’s of that same generation of musical pioneers.

Oh hell! Have Mansa as well; an atmospheric and expressive instrumental track progressing to a danceable groove.

@Cassana you shood check out aguy calld mike doors

@liseo I’ve been aware of him for a while now. And yes, he’s good.
Years ago, I did a workshop with Declan Zapala on percussive guitar, basic hits, and how to approach putting in the percussive hits. Fascinating stuff. It’s also a fairly young and niche beast. I can only think of four guitarists who did/do it up to a performance level: Eric Roche, Mike Doors, Declan Zapala (the only one on classical), and Marcin.

@Cassana i love mike i could just listen to him all day

@Cassana oh shit this is awesome. I need more of this! Who else should I listen to!

@BlinkWithAKink Glad you liked. The list is rather long, and many great guitarists back up Malian singers and don’t get much spotlight, but just a few I usually mention when introducing people to this stuff: Ali Farka Touré, Afel Bocoum, Amadou & Mariam, Vieux Farka Touré, Lobi Traoré, Fatoumata Diawara, Tinariwen, Tamikrest, Songhoy Blues. But there are so many more. And a while back I shared this lovely video of Salif Koné (who backs up Rokia Koné) expertly demonstrating three Malian guitar styles: youtube.com/watch?v=D_UMNUHQyP
