Paul Karrer: Why I went to a drag show with my students and my grandmother from Florida

"Each year in American Samoa, a Fa’afafine beauty pageant takes place. They also are held in major hotels of independent Samoa just over 130 miles away. I taught in both places and neither event was ever to be missed.

These pageants were major social events, widely advertised months ahead. Tickets were difficult to get. Friends, family members, cousins, offspring, chieftains, priests, ministers and politicians attended. In my case, my school staff colleagues and several students came to support one contestant: our librarian.

Yes, students attend the pageants with their teachers."
