As you may have heard, 17 states have sued the US government to overturn Section 504, a landmark piece of civil rights legislation that's provided Americans with equal access to schools, medical facilities and other aspects of public life for more than 50 years. The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund is holding a webinar to discuss this lawsuit and provide ways we can fight back. Register here: dredf-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi

ZoomWelcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Disability Community Briefing: What You Can Do to Stop the Attack on Section 504. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar. In September 2024, a group of 17 states filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government called Texas v. Becerra. The lawsuit asks the court to get rid of Section 504 and its regulations. Section 504 is a major civil rights law for people with disabilities. Section 504 makes sure that people with disabilities are treated fairly and included at school and at their doctors appointments. Losing Section 504 would be a devastating loss of major civil rights for the disability community. This community briefing will explain: - What Section 504 is and why it is so important to the disability community - What the new Section 504 regulations say and why they are good for the disability community - What is currently happening in the Texas v. Becerra lawsuit - What community members can do to help stop the attack on Section 504 Speakers: -Claudia Center (she/her), Legal Director, Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) -Steven Schwartz (he/him), Senior Counsel, Center for Public Representation -Alison Barkoff (she/her), Hirsh Health Law & Policy Associate Professor and Program Director, Milken Institute School of Public Health, The George Washington University -Chloe Rothschild (she/her), Self-Advocate -Theo Braddy (he/him), Executive Director, National Council on Independent Living **ASL and CART (live captions) provided.
