It's so difficult sometimes to explain HOW and WHY works so well without moderators, especially to folks coming from ad-based centralized social media (like , , , etc.). Your article nails it to a T:

IT'S BECAUSE THEY HAVE ADVERTISERS.

Ads mean they have to track you, and collect data about you & your friends, so they can know who to sell what to. Ads mean they want to keep people angry and arguing, so you will spend more time staring at the screen and fighting trolls. Ads mean they profit from minimal moderation, not maximum civility.

Just to add, there are lots and lots of moderators on here, way more per member than on Twitter, Facebook etc. Fediverse moderators work very hard to keep this place nice, remember to support them with donations and nice words! 😃

Twitter, Facebook etc mainly rely on algorithm moderation rather than actual human moderators, and nasty people learn to game the algorithms.
