USPol, Trump

Oh, and I didn't even get to the checks & balances part of the discussion.

Very briefly: the legislative branch is completely uninterested in fulfilling their duties. The hardcore MAGAs in Congress are cheering the administration on, heavy Team Fascism vibes there. The more traditional conservatives there and in the Senate are content to sit back and let it happen. The Democratic opposition are largely too timid to stand up and say anything, much less do anything to stop it. The funding crises, the impoundments - these are *right* in their wheelhouse, and ... crickets.

The judicial branch... some of it is trying to continue to run the Sane Constitutional Republic program and hold the administration to account, but it's mostly lower-court judges. At the top, the rot is pretty severe. The Supreme Court has whiffed on *many* cases, going back several years, indicating that the conservative majority is largely happy to produce ad hoc and post hoc justifications, completely against precedent and even black-letter law, to enable this administration to do exactly what it wants, the law and the Constitution be damned.

"This is why Donald Trump cannot allow Kilmar Abrego Garcia to return to the United States. …

In an authoritarian regime, the opposition needs symbols and stories. Kilmar Abrego Garcia is that symbol. His abduction in front of his autistic son and imprisonment in a foreign concentration camp is that story.

All of the opposition’s energy should be focused on him."

"This is not incarceration; it is liquidation.

Incarceration is a penal act. It is controlled by laws. There are well-understood mechanisms governing the length of terms, applications for parole, processes for release.

Liquidation is a political act. It is arbitrary, opaque, and unappealable. There are no controlling laws or processes. There is only power."

This is the beginning of an American policy of state terror, and it has to be identified as such to be stopped“….

… „In the history of state terror, the escape from law into coercion takes three forms, all of which were on display, incipiently, in the White House yesterday: the leader principle; the state of exception; and the zone of statelessness.“…

"The central feature in the U.S.—a cult of personality in which the erratic, chaotic, and unhinged leader runs roughshod over its people—has nothing to do with Democrats. We cannot blame the small 'd' democrats (or the large 'D' ones either) for extremism or intransigence simply for insisting their fellow countrymen recognize objective reality and respect democratic norms."

"If you didn’t know better you would think 'polarization' descended from on high, a plague for which no one party is responsible. This deliberate obfuscation of our political situation suits the corporate media’s obsession with moral equivalence and contrived balance."

I do not mean to minimize what happened in the Oval Office on Monday."

"While it is completely outrageous and startling that Rubio as Secretary of State would enter into a contract to render people in United States to this hellhole without due process, in the sense of, if you knew that Marco Rubio had deep ties to the for-profit private prison industry in the U.S., it might not surprise you as much."
