Archaeologists reveal new discoveries in Pharaoh Shepseskaf’s tomb A Polish-Egyptian archaeological mission completed the next phase of work in the tomb of Pharaoh Shepseskaf, located in the Saqqara necropolis near Cairo. Shepseskaf was an Egyptian pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, believed to have ascended the throne after Menkaure died in 2503 BCE. Unlike his predecessor, who was interred within a pyramid at Giza, Shepseskaf was buried in a mastaba, a rectangular, flat-roofed tomb known as Mastabat al-Fir’aun, or the “Bench of the Pharaoh.” Recent excavations focused on a detailed investigation of the burial chamber. The team was able to recover most of the fragments of the destroyed sarcophagus, allowing for partial reconstruction. In addition, they employed advanced 3D scanning technology to create a digital model of the internal structure of the tomb and performed geophysical surveys to map the layout of the processional ramp and its surroundings...

This rather imposing looking gentleman was called Roy (or Roma-Roy) and he was the high priest of Amun during the later part of Ramesses II’s reign & into the reigns of the next Pharaohs. His brother Bakenkhonsu and his father Roma had been high priests before him.

This is a block statue, he’s depicted seated in a squatting position. In front of his legs he presents a sistrum, which is a musical instrument that is particularly associated with the worship of Hathor and her face is on the instrument. 🧵 1/3

A photograph of an ancient Egyptian statue. The statue is made of black granite, and is photographed slightly from below so presents an imposing image. The man is portrayed sitting in a squat with his knees up in front of him and his arms folded on top of his knees, we are seeing him face on. The arms are about ⅓ of the way down from the top of the photo, and the head behind them is slightly out of focus due to a fairly narrow depth of focus. This adds to the sense of presence. In front of his legs he has a sistrum, which is an ancient Egyptian instrument that is like a rattle. The instrument stands to the full height of his lower legs, and the handle is shaped like a female face with cow ears and a long wig. Above the face the sides of the sistrum curve like cow horns.

I like how the creation stories of ancient Egypt can be received to be complementary, i.e. they complement each other, running in parallel with instead of against each other.

Of course certain dynasties promoted their choicest over the others but at least from thousands years after the fact it has a very different feel in comparison to how modern religions, though monotheistic ones more so but also some polytheistic ones, handle things.
