Covid is no worse than the flu?

I know, I have now led dozens of posts over the past few years with this sarcastic question. But now, with the pandemic officially declared over by the politicians and the majority of the public behaving as though Covid19 is no longer a threat, it seems particularly apropos in light of the reasons for declaring the pandemic over: to get people back to work and back to consuming. Yet, as the data from this study show, Long Covid has had an enormous negative impact on the income and quality of life for millions of Americans, particularly the poor and working class, and particularly for African Americans and women.

*Nearly 1 in 7 working-age adults in the U.S. had experienced Long Covid by the end of 2023
*Socially disadvantaged adults were 152% more likely to suffer from Long Covid
*Groups with higher risk for Long Covid include being Black, LGBTQ, Hispanic, Female, or low income
*In 2022, people with Long Covid lost $211 billion in wages
*In 2023, people with Long Covid lost $218 billion in wages

One reason for the disproportionate effect of Long Covid on marginalized communities, particularly BIPOC and poor people, is that these groups suffer disproportionately from chronically elevated levels of the stress hormone, Cortisol, due to the stress caused by racism, sexism, homophobia, and poverty. Elevated Cortisol levels are also associated with increased risk of heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, as well as impaired immune function.

For those of you interested in the gender pay gap (which I'm assuming is most of you/us), here is the data for the countries of the EU.

For comparison in the UK (expressed differently) the GPG is around 13% which, would make it in these terms around 87% of male pay (the UK figure is the median pay rate for both genders).

To say this is a problem that still requires work would be an understatement

  • Hostile and benevolent sexism are almost always correlated

  • Hostile and benevolent attitudes toward men also almost always positively correlated

#culture and #patriarchy do their thing, pushing everyone toward rigidly-defined gender roles, partly with Benevolent Sexist ideas like "Women are pure and wholesome" and "Men are caring breadwinners." Neither of those is universally true, and both are only applied in certain situations. In other situations, the hostile sexism comes out, e.g. "Women are dishonest sluts" and "Men are violent abusers."

Culture is a bastard in most cases.

Joint endorsement of hostile and benevolent gender ideologies is theorized as essential for maintaining the gender hierarchy in which women and men hold unequal power while also depending on one another to meet important goals (Glick & Fiske, 1996, 2001). Indeed, cross- cultural studies indicate that HS and BS are almost universally positively correlated (Glick et al., 2000), as are HM and BM (Glick et al., 2004). Thus, cultures that endorse more hostile ideologies about both women and men also tend to offset these negative views with more flattering, benevolent ideologies about each gender group, with medium-to-large pair-wise correlations between these ideologies (rs=.34-.69; Glick et al., 2004).

Q. is there a growing epidemic of misogyny among school children?

research commissioned by the BBC suggests incidents of misogynic behaviour & expression(s) are increasing.... this would suggest not only are young females lives already being impacted by sexism, we are storing up more trouble when these children got older.

The impact of the mano-sphere seems to be growing & its not really clear how best to tackle its corrosive influence on society!

Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, the US military rep to the NATO Military Cmte, was notified of her removal over the weekend…. Chatfield’s abrupt dismissal marks at least the 9th firing of a senior US military officer, including 4 women, since Trump returned to office <3 months ago.

I am reading a peer-reviewed article that describes a study that featured 5 drivers; 4 male, 1 female. It includes the following analysis:

"It shows that male is more impulsive and daring in operating their vehicles by 22% than a female who is more hesitant and less daring, which is consistent with the physiological nature of women."

Do I reject all further findings or?
