#StarTrekLowerDecks E405 - "Empathalogical Fallacies"

@HippieScubaSteve

T’Ana is really showing that #Caitians aren’t really that many generations away from their less scientific #Kzinti cousins (at least as #Niven and others have it).

Or perhaps she’s of Caitian-Kzinti bi-species heritage, somewhat like a Vulcan with a late 22nd century Romulan grandparent.

Would love to find out that T’Ana’s loss of her tail wasn’t entirely accidental, rather a way to lose a Kzin hairless tail

@lothcat

Strongly recommend #StarTrekTAS. While it ran Saturday morning & had Filmation animation, the writing targeted a general audience, #Scifi writers engaged.

#Niven is clear that the #Kzinti in #StarTrek aren’t in the same universe as the ones in his #Nspace books, but are the same aliens. In his anthology ‘Playgrounds of the Mind’, where the story the TAS episode is based on appears, he says he wanted to share the Kzinti & see what Trek writers would do with them.

@lothcat

If we go with #Caitians & #Kzinti, like Vulcans-Romulans, being one species in origin - as put forward in B-canon #WorldsOfTheFederation & confirmed by #Niven himself in #PlaygroundsOfTheMind - then it’s not at all surprising that the more scientifically minded Caitians shared their Kzinti cousins willingness to consume other sentient species.

#LarryNiven wrote that he put #Kzin into #StarTrekTAS to see what other writers would do with them in the #StarTrek universe.

Replied to C.

#Pournelle - perhaps most widely #famous for being a great science-fiction #author, frequently in collaboration with Larry #Niven and Stephen #Barnes - was a bit of a polymath. He invented the 2-axis scale now known as a "Pournelle chart" in his political science Ph. D. dissertation, in 1963.

See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pournell

A 1-axis chart misrepresents views or policies so badly you end up with, for example, #communists, #socialists, and #liberals all close together. (edit: thinko)

I just finished Larry #Niven's *Ringworld* and it involved a similar concept of subtle, universe-shattering psionics to #PKD's *Ubik*. I don't know what it says about middle-aged male #scifi writers penning 20-something women with unlimited psychic powers, but I am willing to look past that and/or take it at face value.
