Today in Labor History August 9, 2014: Police in Ferguson, Missouri, shot and killed an unarmed African American teenager, Michael Brown. Witnesses said that he had his hands in the air and said “don’t shoot.” The cops left his body to rot in the sun for four hours, long enough for children to gather, and the media, and for the news and images to spread. The outrage sparked worldwide protests against police brutality and murder. Police attacked protesters with military grade weapons, part of the post-911 militarization of police agencies across the country. The cop who killed Brown, Darren Wilson, was cleared of all charges. Ten years later, Brown’s family is still calling for justice.
