Yes. Well aged logs are a great addition. The European garden enthusiasts call it Hugelkultur. <a href="https://epicure.social/tags/hugelkultur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hugelkultur</span></a>, <a href="https://epicure.social/tags/compost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>compost</span></a>.</p>

Not just assume that everything that is dug up must go back the same way.</p>

Tom<p>More dirt added on top of the smaller wood and washed in. The woven poly barrier cut and pulled up on the insides and leaves added around the edges to hold it up. Then dirt was put around the edges, more small sticks in the middle, and finally a layer of dirt on top of everything.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RaisedBeds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaisedBeds</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/hugelkultur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hugelkultur</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a></p>
Tom<p>I sawed up some of the willow debris pile which was somewhat rotted in the bottom. The big pieces were shortened and dirt was added and washed in, then a layer of the small sticks added.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RaisedBeds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaisedBeds</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/hugelkultur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hugelkultur</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a></p>
Tom<p>Preparing the first new raised bed. I dug out all the better soil and I might dig it down more so I can mix that light colored soil with the wood. I need to cut the willow wood up a little too so it fits tighter. Willow and poplar tree roots will still be a problem but I guess I can dig them out still if needed. I don't want to bury any poly barrier and it wouldn't really be hugelkultur if I did.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RaisedBeds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaisedBeds</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GrowYourOwn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GrowYourOwn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/hugelkultur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hugelkultur</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a></p>

This is the beginnings of building a hűgel. A hűgel is a tall, self fertilised raised bed.

It’s a useful way of using the unwanted wood I’ve collected from both clearing the plot and hedge brushwood.

In time organic matter will be added into the pile of wood. A soil or compost outer layer will be added to plant directly into.

The inner wood and compostable material will break down to fertilise the bed and also provide wildlife habitat.

Saw a Lebanese cucumber for 9.99 AUD in the supermarket today. Price for a single one, not for one kg!Couldn’t believe it, so I took a pic. Later this arvo I harvested a fresh heirloom organic cucumber from my hügelkultur veggie patch. Practically for free, if you don’t count the price for seedlings, time and effort. Growing your own food makes so much sense, with ever increasing prices more than ever! Better quality, better taste, and you get free exercise and nature therapy ;)
