Update. When the #UBuffalo cancelled its #Elsevier #BigDeal, "faculty were supportive…There was frustration expressed with the current structure of the publishing industry, particularly with the exorbitant pricing of journal subscriptions…Data showed a decrease in usage on the #ScienceDirect platform and [an affordable] increase in requests for unavailable articles" through other channels described in the article.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). When I was in high school it was a big deal. You wanted into college, you had to take the test. The better your score, the better (supposedly) your acceptance rate at better schools, and the more scholarships you might get. Again, a big deal.

Induced a lot of stress for some students. I remember our cafeteria filled with most of our classmates all facing the same way and spaced apart from each other, with our fabled No. 2 pencils at the ready. And silence descending over us as the proctor intoned, "You may begin."

Some time later we all got our scores in the mail. And many went around the next day compared, congratulating, or commiserating.

But you know what? Not a single person has asked me for that score since I filled out my college application. As big a deal as it was at the time, you'd think it would come up in job interviews or something.

So, last week I got a TP-Link 2.5gbps router from Amazon. Got it next-day (w/Prime). Plugged it in, power went on. Plugged in ethernet cables, no lights at all on the ports.

Sent it back.

Ordered another (cos amazon didn't have option for "replace" instead of refund.)

New one - when ordered with Prime again - was $50 off for Prime #BigDeal day or whatever the hell it is. It won't ship til Monday - for arrival Tuesday! WTF Amazon?

Also, hope it's not broken too!

Here's a #BigDeal new study on the health impacts of oil and gas drilling.

"We find that air pollution in 2016 from the oil and gas sector in the US resulted in 410 000 asthma exacerbations, 2200 new cases of childhood asthma and 7500 excess deaths, with $77 billion in total health impacts."
