Michael K Johnson
New ham adventures...

Today, I was at a park (but not a #POTA) site, so I hunted POTA with my new-to-me KX3 as a way of learning in the field a bit of how to use it. I had 4 40m CW QSOs using the diminutive AX1 + AXE1 combo antenna with both the supplied radials attached directly to the radio, and 2 20m QSOs (one CW, one SSB) with a 5.6m whip vertical on a JPC-12 base. I used 15W because I am new to #AmateurRadio and have enough trouble, without making more trouble for myself by going truly QRP.

The QSB was heavy. I had one failed QSO in particular that started with me getting a great 599 signal, but then repeated "KZ4?" responses from the activator even when I dialed down my keyer to send my repeats more slowly, and just as their response may have included my full call sign, they faded away completely and I never pulled them back in. (But I didn't write down the call sign, so I don't remember who it was...)

My Morse code recognition sure needs more work. I suspect that when I'm better at it, it will be easier to pull signals out of the noise. I did receive a very faint signal from Europe (Germany IIRC) but I couldn't quite copy the whole call sign so I didn't attempt to reach across the pond with my meager 15 watts this time. ☺

Darrell Hilliker 👨‍🦯♾️📡
When I used to listen to #QST in the 1980s, I remember an article about Gravity Gradient Modulation and another about an extremely powerful antenna made from a superconductor. I particularly remember being easily able to figure out the GGM article was bunk due to the references about using antimatter and describing how easy it was to obtain. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

Walt Mankowski
Update: I've figure out how to copy my certificate to my new box. You've got to save your callsign certificate on the old box, then load the file you saved on the new box.

This could really be better documented. You shouldn’t have to be an expert on X.509 public key certificates just to be able to upload your POTA logs from a new box!
#LOTW #hamradio #amateurradio

Darrell Hilliker 👨‍🦯♾️📡
If it's real, has anyone actually built such an antenna and what were your real-world results? Article seems short on some details, which also makes me wonder... #AmateurRadio #HamRadio (2/2)

Walt Mankowski
I’ve been setting up a new laptop today, and I'm once again blown away to realize that the security measures for my ARRL #LOTW certificate are far stricter than for any of my financial institutions, workplace VPNs, or secure messaging platforms. I respect it, but it's really feels like overkill for what's supposed to be a fun hobby. Case in point: having to wait up to four business days for staff to personally review my request just so I can upload my logs from a new computer.

#hamradio #amateurradio

Stu Gott
RideTheLowcountry was pretty intense today. The usual array of scraped knees and flat tires. Sadly there were a couple of more serious injuries.

I teamed up with a mechanic, but most of the hams rode solo. That's a bit odd to me. The guys who can hear can't fix bikes. The guys that can fix bikes don't have cell coverage.
