One more tip I’ve found helpful for protecting your mental health: minimize how much news and social media you consume. Having lived through a war, I’ve learned to approach news differently. Instead of watching or listening to it, I read it—this reduces the emotional impact since I’m not absorbing the heightened reactions of reporters or anchors. I still stay informed, but without the emotional toll.

I also start with international news to get a broader perspective, then skim headlines from NPR or Reuters for local updates. This approach helps me stay grounded and not overwhelmed by every chaotic headline.

Another thing that really helps: ending my day with laughter. Shows like The Daily Show or Stephen Colbert are great for this, and the humor relaxes me enough to sleep. This journey is a long one (at least four years!), so practicing self-care is essential.
