The author seems quite impressed. I have no idea why. When I traded my car, my offer was lower because the car was a manual "yeah nah, mate, just can't move manuals off the lot anymore". Enthusiasts and traditionalists prefer manuals, but most drivers couldn't care less. 
There are ~30k new cars advertised on Carsales Oz today, but only 844 are manuals (2.81%). Of ~230k vehicles advertised, only 29531 are manuals (12.8%). A vanishing market.
