Those weak, oppressed, impoverished, deluded, uneducated, psychologically disturbed people, clutching at any straw of hope, well, they saw in Trump a strongman, and bully, but THEIR strongman, and bully, who would fight for them....But they only elected their biggest abuser, and most implacable enemy. If poverty, injustice, corruption in government outrages you, then Trump is the last person to run to, for it's because of cruel, greedy sadists like Trump, that this world is choking on the sulphuric fumes of Hell.

@Nonilex

Here's a topic I don't think is being addressed. That really should be causing absolute outrage and alarm.

We know that Elon Musk with some Palantir foot soldiers have sacked gov databases, and are working to bind government function to their control.

It is not sufficient to kick these people out. Everything they've done needs to be ripped out or seized.

Technology as the alternative to politics is underway.

This is of course why they're taking steps to eliminate the old. Magnetic tapes come to mind - used for so many decades because they work. Eliminating not just the tapes, but the infrastructure used to support them as a viable storage and backup mechanism, makes it impossible, or at least infinitely harder, to roll back to a workable state that's not filled with as much crap, cruft, backdoors and timebombs as they could stuff in.

Manufacturers are not interested in the old at all, but it doesn't make any money for them.

Like I think DVD players are not being made anymore.

I think I'll be hanging onto my old pieces of equipment. Thank you very much.

But even though have most of the time limited lifespan before they two sort of end up failing

Thinking about how the centrists mocked us when we started calling them the Red Tories.

Thinking about that, and laughing hysterically as "Labour" demolish thirty years of trans rights, embrace austerity for the poor, tell disabled people to get a job or die, steal money from pensioners, criminalise peaceful protest, and reject the EU in favour of wanting to become a vassal of Fascist USA.

The centrists were right, I suppose. They're not Red Tories. They're Red Far Right

carplay is dystopian to me i think that i should be able to sideload whatever fucking apps i want right. i think reading notifications from my phone on my car screen is a hell of a lot more distracting than an app which requires both fucking hands to type something in and display it on the screen (assuming that's how it works i dont' actually know nor do i care). if you are going to shove a tablet in my car as a replacement for my fucking stereo i should be able to play shit like flappy bird. it shouldn't be this closed ecosystem where only special versions of apps are available under the false pretense of security. this falls on regulators too. it's fucking stupid that i can get pulled over for having a laptop computer open on my passenger seat but a tablet is fine. I'm aware of when tesla first did this shit people getting pulled over and cops trying to physically remove the screen...

in reply to Amber (KittyGPT6.9)

legitimately i do not understand how restricting the usage of a web browser is going to make anyone safer especially if you can enter navigation data. google maps isn't safe! if i sat there looking at my phone typing an address for maps the same safety issue is present as if i was reading a text message
in reply to Amber (KittyGPT6.9)

What frustrates me as someone who sometimes rents cars for group road trips is that none of the infotainment systems ever acknowledge the idea there might be someone in the passenger seat, who might for example want to play bluetooth audio

mcc reshared this.

in reply to mcc

come to think of it... fucking stupid that they make bluetooth pairing to your vehicle so god damn involved. for my subaru i had to go through like 5 different submenus. they could literally make a bluetooth button you hold down for like 5 seconds and then it's open for pairing. my headphones have this feature. nooo you have to go to all the hidden settings menu while browsing online guides and then you finally pair it. handing over the aux cable is literally so much easier even on BT capable stereos because of this shit.
in reply to Amber (KittyGPT6.9)

meanwhile me in old (idk early 2000s?) construction mini-van my dad borrows from my uncle:

press one button with the bluetooth logo, the device shows up on my phone, pair with the password displaying on the 7-segment display

we devolved so far with car dashboard because stupid people thought a huge tablet glued to your car was better

in reply to mcc

but also it is impossible to use safely while driving 😭
in reply to yomimono, still on earth

I don't want to use it while driving. I want the person in the passenger seat to use it while I am driving.
in reply to mcc

Yes, that is also how I feel about it and the point I was trying to make.
in reply to mcc

the "solution" I have found to the related problem of "my spouse and I share a car, which attempts to auto-connect to the last Bluetooth device used unless started with a USB-connected phone" is "always remember to turn off Bluetooth on my phone when I leave the car" (a USB-connected Android Auto device will turn Bluetooth on by itself). If I forget to plug in my phone when I'm driving, or forget to turn off Bluetooth when I'm not driving (because it will reach the driveway from the living room), the fallback is "drive down the block until out of range, park, plug in the phone, and turn the whole car off and on again"…

I miss my old car with the aux in and the phone holder magnetically-secured to the dash (the gravitationally-secured prototype pictured was … not a good idea, which I thankfully learned the easy way rather than the concussive way)

in reply to Almost A Fern

Simply only buy phones that support headphones jacks and only buy cars that support aux cables and the problem is solved
in reply to mcc

I did see a review of a car recently where the while infotainment system was set up to be operated specifically from the passenger seat. I thought that was a pretty bold move. Annoyingly, I can't remember what car that was.
in reply to Dag Ågren ↙︎↙︎↙︎

The original Tesla model S had the whole touchscreen turned to the driver, so it was difficult for the passenger to remove. You could imagine reversing this, or rather putting the screen on a pivot, so you can tilt it toward the passenger and once you've done this it allows doing things the driver "shouldn't" do (if we're stuck on this thing about the corp parenting the customer). I don't know what this would do to crash tests.
in reply to mcc

(The car I was thinking of is apparently the Ferrari Purosangue, the Most Ridiculous Car.)

My local funeral home changed its web hosting platform for a corporate funeral industry stock hosting platform, and it doesn't have an #RSS feed because corporate funeral home service industry provider wants you to visit the website to hawk its merchandising—flowers, caskets, trinkets, hardcopy guest books, etc, all the things they get a commission on.

I read the whitepaper for sales and marketing from the big corporate funeral service provider that says just that. It read that merchandising makes up 60% of the profit that a funeral home gets on an annual basis.

RSS kept me in the loop. I still visited the obits and left condolences and saw their merchandise.

Once again the NatACTs are hauling out the "dependency" language to shame people on benefits, as if needing to pay rent, bills and eat is some kind of vice;

rnz.co.nz/news/business/556428…

Our society is structured so people need money to meet our basic needs, but much of the work it needs done it won't pay for. So a lot of people do unpaid work and make use of a welfare benefit to survive. Why the hell should beneficiaries feel ashamed about that?

Bad Democrat, no cookie.

WA Governor Bob Ferguson has been putting forth policies more inline with Trump's white house than what you'd expect from a Democrat.

The new governor's policies has been a loud promise to drastically increase the number of cops in the state while at the same time over seeing budget cuts that could shrink social services and cut state worker hours in an economy drowning in rising costs.
