Innocent people suffer the consequences of violent extremism, and this kind of terrorism only produces deeper, more intractable problems. My thoughts and hopes are for peace, and for democracy for all people in the region, but such a future is proving ever more elusive, I fear.

But mentioning Hamas attacks without also mentioning both Israeli retaliation AND the unprovoked actions Israel takes everyday on the very real genocidal plan they have for Palestine is disingenuous at best. Hamas might be terrorists, but they are fighting for the survival of all Palestinians. Israel is fighting for more land, they are not the same.

I did not make excuses for murder, i merely stated that pointing out murder on one side without the other is bad and even worse when one side, however misguided, is fighting for survival while the other is just colonialists grabbing more land. @georgetakei I thought this was the Russian mentality. If you're causing problems in one region, divert attention by escalating unrest in another region. And then make a public statement about wanting to help make peace in the same area.

Is this not what the Israelis voted for? They installed a corrupt, far-right government that promised to go hard with the Palestinians. I regret the loss of any innocent life, but Israelis have been begging for this to happen. Now they, in turn, can slaughter more innocent Palestinians and occupy Gaza. This is what they want.

And it is heartbreaking that the rightwing Israeli gov will respond by attacking Palestinian civilians.
Both groups deserve to live in peace in a two state solution, as agreed 30 years ago. The only ones who benefit from this violence are the rightwing extremists in each group.
@georgetakei No one can say Hamas is innocent initiating an attack on Israel and Israeli civilians, but let's not lose sight or forget the history leading up to these events, and neither side is innocent of violence against civilians upon the other side. Both side have blood on their hands. Condemn Hamas for this attack but don't side with Israel unless you're willing to accept their attacks on Palestinians and their ongoing removal of Palestinians from their territory for illegal Israeli settlements. JMO

I share your sentiments 100% George. I can also add that there is no end to the blame game. Yes, there is no absolute equivalency between both parties, but in order to achieve long lasting peace, the leaders of each side need to accept equally the following proclamation: Long live Israel, long live Palestine.

The peace you long for would have been possible if that fascist Netanyahu had not thrown the Saudi King Abdullah's comprehensive peace plan in the garbage in 2009 but sat down and negotiated Isreal's inclusion into the family of Middle Eastern nations. All the bloodshed since that year goes on Netanyahu's account.
