European alternatives for popular services from the USA. This page is far from perfect or complete but just an illustration that there are alternatives.

@AlbertBorneo i wouldn''t say all mentioned alternatives are OK , it's just nice to see that there are alternatives

Thank you for the link, for two reasons:
1) People are jumping on Proton's CEO without CITATIONS for why they say so
2) This analysis is reassuring, and seems much more plausible than the hysterical assertions that Proton's CEO is a Trump supporter.
in reply to Regendans

@regendans @AlbertBorneo very interesting read and nice find! I myself was also on the fence about switching to Proton services (I use the free plan of their mail already) like cloud storage due to hearing about Andy’s post, but reading through the article it does seem myself and others might have been hasty in judging him and Proton.
in reply to Impish4249

@regendans @AlbertBorneo
Having read the post, though not every detail of the linked in articles I am rethinking my opinion on Proton. I do wish Yen had not made the pronouncement, or at least had done it differently, perhaps with out the typically pejorative term "Dems" but, as I read through the Medium post I had a bit of déjà vu from a time when an exec in my company chose some words poorly and almost everything we did to put out the fire only seemed to fan the flames.
in reply to Regendans

@regendans @AlbertBorneo It really irritates me how this is framed as "surprising". What would be completely surprising is if there was any substance behind the claim in the first place. I refuse to shift the burden of proof.

Another issue I have is that apparently everything normal has to be called liberal. FFS stop being so damned US centric!

The author has done some good research though.

please be critical of the services on that site. Several are European companies, but still host their services on US cloud services.

Even if the servers are in the EU, if the company itself is US-based, this is still a problem

in reply to Stefan Koopmanschap 🇵🇸

@stefan There are indeed a lot of "resellers" that use the big three for their virtual private servers and therefore your data will still be in reach of the USA.
in reply to Frank Heijkamp

@alterelefant @stefan Here's a USA-free list of computing services: mastodon.au/@Linux/11393674117…

@barbapulpe A few people asked if I have a list of providers, outside the United States.

YES, I have a list of Domain Registers, Web Hosting, Privacy Focused E-mail, Managed DNS, Public DNS, CDN, and VPN providers that I have confirmed as not based out of the USA or owned by a USA company.

I am interested in expanding this list, so if anyone has any suggestions, please speak up.

"popular services from the USA."
They are actually from California.
It is a problem that we also have in the stock market. I have never owned stock from the USA. I shorted Exxon once, but it doesn't count.
All my USA stock were actually from California. I am left with a couple of whom I am a day one fan. But I am scared. That guy is a mix of Hoover, W Bush and Der Adolf.

When using this site, make sure service actually uses EU cloud/hosting.

Some of the services there openly use AWS/GCP or a bit more stealthly host their operations (like email/support) with US vendors.

Unfortunately, one has to check to be sure.

in reply to Jarek Rozanski ➡️ Wide Angle 📊

@jarek Would you be willing to list some that are safe from the US? I'm not very techy and am not sure I would figure it out correctly.
in reply to Susi

@Susibryant
Case by case, I would imagine.

What are you looking for? I am sure Fediverse can recommend service that will help you protect your freedoms and privacy.

@jarek @Susibryant
It seems that for many entries @european_alternatives uses labels like “EU hosted” or “EFTA hosted” to indicate where a service is hosted. See e.g. european-alternatives.eu/categ…
In case you want to do more checks (e.g. where the business mail of a company that offers a service you are interested in is hosted) hosting-checker.net/, that is built by the same maker, might be useful.

I'm trying to get a similar thing off the ground, for #UK specific #services and #platforms.

Anyone that has recommendations for 100% UK based options, please let me know.

@FatimaShamsAref ...well, if people don't trust the US as a country, you probably don't want services from a company there. Especially as the rule of law, oversight, security is broken down as is happening now in the US
in reply to Erik Jonker

Thank you for sharing this valuable information. I have to look for a free email service which can also give me at least 15 GB of free space, free as in free forever; I haven't seen that yet on the list...

2 of the 3 “link and follow us, please, we need you to love us” icons at the bottom of the page are…US based services. D’oh.
in reply to Stephen Beitzel

@pirateguillermo true, but any transition will be very gradual and take time (unless more war breaks out)
in reply to Erik Jonker

Anychance you know of similar but for Canadian based companies? I"m struggling to find one. Use some of these already, but, want to support Canada where I can.

@geoff_eg ..good point, a page with alternatives in other democratic countries with normal legal systems would have been better maybe, this page is EU only. But i would happily use Canadian products 🙂

I don't think it's a question of the nationality of the software, but whether it's free and open source or not. It doesn't help me that it's European software if I don't know what's behind it. #opensource #freesoftware

in reply to Javipz

@Javipz sure, i am big fan of opensource, this is just a page i shared and surely far from perfect. It illustrates for some people that there are alternatives. There are many other pages which focus on opensource. Opensource in itself is also not "the solution", it's also about how this is used/packaged in a service or product. Most people don't care about the tech used.
in reply to Erik Jonker

I share the idea that the alternatives are good and I also liked the page because they are quality alternatives. I think there is training work to make people aware of the #technology they use. If someone doesn't care, they can delegate to the #OpenSource community. We must prevent nationalist ideas from wanting to be taken to #softwaredevelopment as they have wanted to be taken to #science research

Tech Cyborg reshared this.

in reply to Erik Jonker

Sorry, but it's stupid. There are products and services, not government. A lot of 'european' alternatives use mentioned services in background. If you are finding independent alternatives, prefer open source instead.
in reply to brabitom

...it has advantages to use european suppliers/services, regardless the components in the background that are used, at least from a legal perspective. Attaining more independence is a gradual process that takes time. I am a big fan of opensource (and so is everybody in tech) so no disagreement there.

Nice. And what are the EU alternatives to US computers?

I would like to de-US-ify everything in my computer life, both academic and personal.

in reply to Erik Jonker

But made according to US specifications, particularly Microsoft (starting with the BIOS or the newer variants) and Apple computers.

Which provider offers a Linux-compatible computer without any piece of US interference? None, as far as I know. Even the (non-Apple) ARM computers have US crap built-in, before you install Linux.

in reply to Martin Escardo

@MartinEscardo it's also a bit too extreme to want this and almost impossible with international supply chains
in reply to Erik Jonker

I've just mentioned this problem to my 15-year old son, and he answered "there is coreboot" and gave me this link:

coreboot.org/

I haven't studied the link.

But there is something.

I'd wish there was a competitive alternative to Cloudflare. Their free plan includes free SSL + free CND & proxy.
in reply to Erik Jonker

Great list, although its a shame the EU are also trying to undermine encryption.

I use Nextcloud. It’s free and open source. You can run it on your own server at home, but I pay a small fee for a provider in the UK (around 4 euros per month, though there’s an even cheaper plan). The provider ensures everything stays up to date. Plus, you can choose where your server is located (for me: in Europe), and it runs on 100% green energy. I’m very, very impressed with this Google Docs alternative and highly recommend it.

No technical skills needed!
