It was terribly cold. And there was zero color, so I tried creating colorless colors. Next time, I'll imagine a colorful laser show inside the Hague Passage. To keep me warm.

Ik ben liefhebber van Arvo Pärt, en de uitvoering van Cappella Amsterdam was werkelijk prachtig. Sterker nog, het was amazeballs. En Bach nam ik op de koop toe.

You are all I've got!

I just pulled the plug on my FB-account. So now Friendica is all I've got.
And Mastodon.
And Pixelfed, and, and, and...

Feels good!

Next up: Getting rid of Google. There are a lot of fantastic alternatives out there.

Public or private?

I would like to know when a post is private or not. So, is this correct?:

  • To mention an individual user, I type: @username@instance.tld
  • To mention a group (a subaccount used as a forum or a community) I type: !groupname@instance.tld

When I use '!', the message gets posted directly to that group. It ensures that all group members see the post. If the group is private, the message will be visible only to group members. If the group is public, the message will be visible to everyone (including non-members and possibly search engines).

Is the use of @ or ! the same as choosing 'Limited/Private' on the Permissions-tab?

Thanks,
Kind regards,
Erik

Mentioning a user doesn't make the post private. If you want to have a post private, you have to change the permissions of that specific post. The only exception are posts to groups.

Revolt anyone..?

Is anyone using Revolt?

Revolt is very much like Discord. Also, it is free and open-source. Respects your privacy, no ads, no trackers. Made in Europe.

Check it out!

So, if I mention a private group with an exclamation mark, the post will be visible only to people inside that private group.

About groups, or sub-accounts, in Friendica

MeyariMcFarland reshared this.

in reply to Erik van Schaaik

Now, I was hoping to add some categories to my group (sub-account)—like in Discord, a list of topics of interest. For example: a culinary group could have the following categories: cooking, baking, sautéing, fermenting, vegetarian, fish.
It seems this is not possible. 'Circles' and 'Channels' aren’t suited for this, right..?

The Smile

I Using the paperclip button I finally managed to embed video. Tadaaa!
However, it does not work in a reply, it only generates a hyperlink to the video.
Ah well...
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

Dat doet Facebook ook. Als je hem binnen Friendica wilt spelen moet je denk ik de video uploaden.

Friendica 'circles' - how to set it up?

in reply to Erik van Schaaik

To create a group like Facebook, you have to make an entirely new account on Friendica, then switch it to a Group account in the settings. You can use the same email address as your personal account.

Groups?

I am new to Friendica and want to learn to create groups. The Friendica wiki tells me:

To create a group, visit your Friendica “Contacts” page and select “Create a new group”.

But there is no such button. I just don't see it. There is only one YouTuber showing how to do it, but his cursor-clicks are off-screen, and the audio is terrible, so it's impossible to make sense of.
Am I the only one experiencing these problems? How can we improve our Friendica skills?

By now I've come a little further with this question. So, when I use Chrome on my phone, I have to be in the timeline that is marked by the nine squares. There, I open the menu by tapping on the little arrows and then there's a 'groups' menu with a plus at the side which allows you to create a group, I think. I'm not sure though, because sometimes it asks for a registration as if it wants you to create a new profile.

in reply to Petra

I am new too; my understanding just from poking around was that "circles" are groups of contacts made for your benefit only so that you can allow only certain people to see certain posts, and that "groups" are like Lemmy channels, guppe groups, or Facebook groups, in that they are dedicated spaces that multiple people can post to.
in reply to Petra

I am starting to believe that groups are indeed a kind of new profile... 🤔
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

@Erik van Schaaik Not only a new profile. An entire new account.

On Friendica, creating a new group as in a Facebook group means registering a whole new login.

If you want to create such a group, I'd recommend you to do that on another Friendica node than the one you're on right now. For if you had a group on the node that you're on right now, and you wanted to moderate the group, you'd have to

  • log out of your personal account
  • log into the group account
  • moderate
  • log out of the group account
  • log back into your personal account

But if your group is on another node, you can stay logged into both at the same time.

@Jupiter Rowland

Thanks for your much-needed clear explanation of how Friendica groups work.

At the moment, it still seems a bit too cumbersome to me. But I might give it a try when I have more time.

In the meantime, I’m also looking into alternatives like Revolt, where you can create dedicated chat groups: rvlt.gg/qndZXnGD

Other ideas and alternatives on 'groups' are always very welcome. 😀

in reply to Erik van Schaaik

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

Wow, thanks for clearing that up. It doesn't seem to get any simpler, does it..?
I'll have a look at Hubzilla and Streams and see where it gets me.
Thanks again @Jupiter Rowland
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

If chat is important to you I would like to mention XMPP. It's for federated instant messaging. Encryption is possible. You can either join an existing server or create your own (which is surprisingly easy), create groups etc. Probably pretty barebone compared to Revolt (which I never used) but you're not depending on a centralized infrastructure.
in reply to Christo

I'm not good with terminology, so I assume node is the same as server in this case.

You and I are on Friendica, which is part of the Fediverse, and we're both using the server friendica.world.

Wikipedia has an image illustrating how the Fediverse is connected:
The diagram shows the common Fediverse platforms with the underlying protocols. Here it is also shown in color which platforms can communicate with which and what functions are implemented. The platforms are illustrated by the predominant sense and purpose in the pattern of the Fediverse logo.

Here's the list of public Friendica servers: dir.friendica.social/servers
If you were to look for another server for e.g. a group circle account, you'd choose one of the not-friendica.world ones. 😅

in reply to Jupiter Rowland

As far as u u can see you don’t need a new login, but a sub account to which you can switch anytime. You can have as many as you like, and they can be anything.

I would even say that Hubzilla’s channels are the same as these sub accounts.

in reply to Daniel de Kay

Could you please give a hint on how to set up such a subaccount? That would be great!
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

1. Go to “Accounts” in the menu that pops up when you click on your profile picture.
2. Then click on “Manage accounts”. You should end up on youserver.url/settings/delegat…
3. Click “Register an additional account”
4. Fill in the name, nickname, and confirm with your main account password.

Voilà – you have a new account as a sub.account to which you can switch to at any time using the accounts menu.

in reply to Daniel de Kay

I'm sorry, @Daniel de Kay , but I don't see an "Accounts" option in the menu that appears when I click my profile picture. Additionally, the URL that's supposed to show where I would end up isn't working.

I must go do some urban painting now (lovely analogue paper and paints!) but I will not give up, and I'll be looking back into this soon.

Daniel de Kay reshared this.

in reply to Daniel de Kay

Hi @Daniel de Kay ,
I have managed to create a sub account. I believe this account is the equivalent of a group, am I right? Or should I proceed to create a group inside this sub account?
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

So, if I've understood it correctly,
a circle-group is basically one "person" that acts as a hub that everyone "in" the "group" shares messages with

so when one tags this "person" (by adding an exclamation mark — ! — in front of the "person"'s name), the "person" then forwards that message to everyone else that it has in "its contacts".

in reply to Petra

@jalanchee @jupiter_rowland @phle
It’s exactly the analogy used to explain federation. ActivityPub an actor sends notifications to all the inboxes of their followers. Just like email.

And the group is then a mailing list, makes sense.

in reply to Erik van Schaaik

I think that the documentation is not up-to-date which is very confusing. The term Groups is replaced with Circles since release 2023.12. To create a new circle go to your.server/circle and press on the + next to Circles.

Real room, imaginary light

Wow, this repost from Pixelfed is really giving me a headache. Either the picture is blurred, or it’s showing two images—one blurred and one clear. I have no idea what’s going on. It’s a simple repost...

There was flat, uninteresting light in my room, so I decided to imagine my own dramatic lighting. (A really fun exercise!) If you look closely, you'll spot the shadow of a penguin; Feathers McGraw is standing in the hallway... waiting for me.

Lazy Dog

The dialogues for 'Lazy Dog' are written in rhyme. It adds both a poetic and humorous quality, giving the story a song-like rhythm.

I’ve also jotted down some exciting ideas for the film’s music—more on that once I’ve had a chance to experiment. Ultimately, I hope to collaborate with one of the composers we met at the Third Character Event at Film Fest Gent.

I asked the Mona app developer about their product, if it was open-source and if content is handled any differently compared to using Mastodon/Friendica directly. The answer was:
'The app is closed-sourced. Your content is handled by the Mastodon server of your choice, inheriting all the “decentralized” features.'
So there! 😀

I like drinking bottles. Did I say drinking? I meant drawing bottles.
The main goal was to test out some new paint tubes: Phthalo Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, and Helio Turquoise. That, and having a gloeibier—a warm cherry beer. It sounds awful, but it's actually similar to Glühwein or mulled wine, which is quite nice on a cold winter day.

Quick newbie-question: Is there an iPhone app I can use with Friendica?
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

It seems that I can only add one server in the official Mastodon iPhone app. As far as I can tell, I can't add a Friendica server there. Which other iPhone app would allow me to use multiple servers simultaneously? (Mastodon, Friendica, Pixelfed, PeerTube)
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

I just discovered an app called Metatext that seems to do the job. It does Mastodon, Friendica and Pixelfed, but no PeerTube. Not that much of a problem, however the name is a bit of a problem of course… Metatext..!?
in reply to Erik van Schaaik

Hmm I don't have an iphone anymore but on Mac I use Mona, I think that was also nice on iPhone.
