Soooo.. talk to me about AirTags. What do you like about the most? How have you used them effectively? Any tips I should know as I get started with them?
I have avoided them entirely, but I have some upcoming international travel where I need to check a bag. A recent experience with someone else using AirTags to know where their luggage actually was, versus where the airline was telling them it was, has made me think an AirTag could be useful for this particular use case.

I’m interested in AirTags (vs all the other location trackers) because I’m DEEP in the Apple ecosystem already, and so this seems to make the most sense.
(And I pretty much NEVER check luggage and just travel carry-on, but in this case I am bringing some notebooks for an event, and so I need the second bag.)

I've been using #airtags since they came out. They work well. Batteries last over a year, are a little puzzling the first time you try to change one, but otherwise... they just work.
I have one on each of my two keyrings because I tend to abandon them on the first flat surface I walk by when I get home, and Find My locates them quickly.
They do get separation anxiety if you forget your iPhone and they get too far from it... but they shut up quickly and stay quiet after that.
Only complaint... the noise they make to help find them is absolutely lame and useless beyond 5' if they don't have a fresh battery.
@danyork I have an Airtag in my carry-on bacpack always (also when not traveling, I go everywhere with the same backpack)
Sometimes I put airtag also in the checked luggage
It just works, not much to say
It shows you the location, and also sends you alerts if it thinks you left it behind
@danyork absolutely get them for your luggage, even if you don’t travel often. Always handy to know where you stashed the bags after the trip.
A tip a friend shared with me: always check the battery a few days before the trip. You don’t want to be caught off guard finding and swapping batteries last minute.
I even have one in my wallet, been very handy for me on a couple of occasions.
this is the only use case i consider reasonable but it does work for fact checking airline stories about where your bag is.
definitely helpful for overseas travel.
i'd check all the possible security settings. i no longer trust apple's defaults on anything.
@danyork it just works. One tip, if you travel with someone, you can share the tag with them so they don’t get warnings being tracked. Eg we do that on our puppies tags
@letoams Thanks! What do you mean “so they don’t get warnings being tracked”?
@danyork if you have an AirTag on you and your family member often walks with you, it will at some point beep warnings. This is the anti-stalk warning. Same if it is on a puppy and your family member walks it. But if you share the tag with them, it won’t beep
@letoams Ahhhh… I did not realize there were anti-stalking features. Very good to know! Thanks!
@danyork yeah and it doesn’t know time. And our dogs sleep on the bed with our dog sitter and …… beep beep beep at 3am
@danyork I’m using them now If you have any anxiety about lost luggage, you can tell within a few minutes of landing whether your bag made it. Great peace of mind. (I only check bags when I add a hiking trip to a business trip)
@RichRuhPhoto Very nice! I now have a set and have them in my 2 luggages and backpack. We’ll see how they work this next week.
