@pkreissel made an algorithm for mastodon to free us from the tyranny of reverse chronological order and it's totally awesome.

IMHO a customizable algorithm is the only thing mastodon needs to really take things to the next level.

@cryptadamist @pkreissel Transparent algorithms that are designed to serve the user rather than to maximize "engagement" are fine. But it's easy to go wrong and duplicate the effect we see on most social media, where the most controversial stuff gets boosted.

@not2b @pkreissel IMHO the key is letting users choose their own algorithm. they can weight things like number of "favorites", how many times in the past you've retooted that person, etc. etc. which is exacly what @pkreissel seems to have implemented.

there should probably be a couple of well labeled presets for non-tech people (i think BlueSky does something like that? not a BS user) but having the user be able to fine tune their own weightings is a dream come true for me.

@not2b @pkreissel i did some streamlining of @pkreissel's work on a customizable algorithm and i think it's kind of a killer feature: universeodon.com/@cryptadamist
