Resplendent Quetzal, a pair of male and females
Dota region at the top of the Savegre River

These birds are truly remarkable. And a great eco-success story.

A male quetzal with an avocado in its mouth. The bird is amazingly bright: scarlet on its underside and a rainbow of blues and greens on its back. It's looking straight into the camera holding the avocado fruit.

They live in the cloud forest and eat wild avocados. We saw this set on private land, owned by a rancher. The rancher was going to cut down the avocado tree where we saw these birds: he could get a couple hundred $s for the wood and would be able to run cattle there for a few years.
Instead, he kept the tree, preserved the area, and now earns a hundreds a day from visitors coming to see these birds ...
