It can be difficult to hire and manage a team of student developers. How do you supervise, set expectations, evaluate, provide promotions and pay incentives, and justify your expenses to your supervisors? What about making sure the students are learning development and leadership skills they can use after graduation?

Recently, at GusDay 2023, I went over six steps I used to create a successful student developer experience in the university library:

- Focus and scope the position (leave room for growth)
- Hire the right students (know what you need from them)
- Provide structure (schedules, communication, and expectations)
- Competencies for advancement (with pay increases!)
- Development guidelines (with room to grow!)
- Learning opportunities (for them and me!)
