Northwest Beer Guide

question of the day - beer festivals. In your experience, do you find beer festivals still useful? Or, have you never attended one and didn't realize there was such a thing?
Second question. If you have attended them, do you find the serving volume and ABV daunting?

@beer

I love beer festivals!!

too much..

but i LOVE them! 😅

@beer I don’t find beer festivals as useful as I once did because pubs have such a wide range of beers now. The festival needs to have a special angle - like the recent Beer and Cheese fest in Portland with pairings expertly curated.

@TracyTThomas 100% For us, it's another opp. to check out new breweries v. the older ones.
But, with all the breweries we have in the Pac. NW it's easy to get distracted. :). A burden of riches indeed!

@beer Part 2 - I usually don’t find the serving volume daunting. ABV depends - I generally just avoid the high ABV ones because they’d overwhelm my capacity. Or I drink a sip and pour the rest out.

@beer The one I attended last year here in Salem was useful, because it was local beer and I was new to the area. I'm going again this year, but I'll need to pace myself better...

@heatharcadia Years-ago, we recall the fun we had discovering so many new breweries. Although, to be fair, we also overindulged and had to sleep it off somewhere. But, that's your 20s for ya.
Now, we see festivals as an opp. to catch up on breweries we've not visited in a while.

@beer I loved beer festivals. We used to go as a group and all split up and grab beer to share with each other so we had the best chance to try as much as possible.

Post-covid none of us are down to share anymore, so we all kind of stopped going. Plus all the ones near me keep making huge jumps in admission price.

@gnitro Like you, it wasn't uncommon to exchange tastes amongst immediate friends. Now, things are a bit more complicated.
It's also why we don't attend many pub's/alehouse festivals.
But, we still encourage people to attend festivals if this is their first time learning about breweries.

@gnitro @beer
There have still been indoor beer festivals but they're not a good enough reason for me to share all of that unmasked indoor air with a horde. The zoo is hosting a sampling fest in a couple of weeks. I've left that tab open in my browser.

@EllenInEdmonton @beer We have a zoo event near me as well. I've never gone though... lol.. one day!

@gnitro @EllenInEdmonton There are a handful around these parts. For example, Seattle hosts one usually in the Fall. Outdoors, complete with an opp. to meet some of the tamer wildlife. Usually falls around dusk or evening.

@beer @jcrabapple Found them a fun distraction some time ago. Not any longer.

@beer The only one I would go to regularly is an outdoor craft beer and rib fest in Kitchener Ontario. My sons and I loved it, and my oldest acquired a taste for good beer. And it’s always been an inclusive and diverse event with music and kids activities. This year’s version, though, seems to have more makers vodka and gin based coolers and fewer breweries. The serving sizes have always been small, so I didn’t find that daunting at all.

@beer I need to get to more of ours -- locally we have two or three awesome Beer Dabbler events each year, on early in the year, one Pride Dabbler, and the MN favorite Winter Dabbler where if you are lucky your light lager doesn't freeze solid before being consumed.

In the past I've done the MVD (most valuable Dabbler) package for the added perks of included food and civilized bathrooms. Worth every penny :)
