Bio

I work in tech: unix (any) sysadmin. One of those weirdos that actively likes managing DNS - if you say "It's always DNS," I'm looking for a new job, consider hiring me and then it won't be.

Has been mentioned in Ars Technica and had ideas ripped off by Cloudflare.

Too young to be a greybeard, plenty old enough to be a total curmudgeon. Assume my entire account has a content warning for swearing and alcohol consumption.

Open source software; Lua programming; synth DIY; ecology; botany; photography; aerospace; NetBSD user; Map Nerd; railfan; cyclist; NAFO Fella; #actuallyADHD

I don't worry if you don't follow back - do what you want with your timeline.

I, by myself, cannot defeat oligarchy.

You, by yourself, cannot defeat oligarchy.

The two of us together probably cannot defeat oligarchy..

But all of us ... the oligarchs cannot survive without us. They cannot plow fields, harvest the grain, lay bricks, maintain the systems that provide clean water and take away sewage, extract fuels that give them electricity, or power their car or airplane - let alone sustain the humans that do all those things, that cook their meals, that fly their planes, that stop the leaks in the roofs of their mansions, that unclog their toilets, that wash their dishes...

I can keep going. I can keep going for hours.

They, quite simply, cannot exist without us.

Because WE, ORDINARY HUMANS, CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT US.

We need to remind them of that.

Ars Technica keeps putting my name in quotes like it's a psedonym.

No, Aaron is actually my legal first name and how I prefer to be addressed. When Ars asked I simply declined to be identified further than that.

Those of us here on Fedi will almost certainly never be a billionaire.

BUT .... that doesn't mean billionaires aren't flammable!

People currently (or curious about) #selfhosting #email: it's absolutely possible. Gmail will deliver your mail if you do it correctly.

It is tricky to setup correctly though.

This post is an open offer to anyone who wants to self host email: if you need help getting your mail delivered, or just need another set of eyeballs to troubleshoot, DM/email me. I'm happy to help.

So used a grade crossing instead of building a bridge purely to have my trains interfere with a competitor's road vehicle network. Realized moving one signal two spaces optimized the crossing for train on car collisions. Probably killing about 200-300 bus passengers/year now.

This thing really is a capitalism simulator.

Realized today that the AI bubble will continue not based on the technological performance, but instead as long as the executive suite continues to believe in it.

How do we push information into their view? I have no mechanism to do so at my employer.

Had a dream I was at an arcade, and while playing Tron, I tripped some weird bug and got what I've wanted for a long time:

Nothing but the Light Cycles game.

It eventually merged with the Tanks playfield and created an awesome hybrid.

If anyone makes video games, please make this.

Greenhouse Break.

I purchased my first Sarracenia two weeks ago at an awesome new-to-me nursery about an hour's drive away.

I picked this one in particular because of bonus fern.

I've an important meeting on Teams, but cannot join as my laptop is doing this thing where, when I reconnect to the docking station, only one key on the keyboard works - usually 'I' or 'space', and I use a lot more than that in my password.

Odds are I'll need to wait several minutes for Teams to load, too, as Teams crashes more often than not when I reconnect the docking station. Sometimes Outlook too. But never Chrome or Excel or putty, any other app at all.

None of this ever happened before this machine was force upgraded away from Windows 10.

My previous boost ( https://mastodon.social/@grimalkina/114350502068645615 ) is all around an excellent read. One particular bit hit me hard:

"Tech is immensely global in its activity and so fanatically geo-located in its employment that even the most senior and most unquestionably Technical people worry about moving away from 2-3 certain US cities."

I went to one of those cities, exactly once. This conversation happened at least three times in as many days:

"Oh you work in tech! Great! When are you moving here?"

"I'm not planning to."

"Oh. You must really suck at your job."

This is not an exaggeration. Tone shifted that fast, multiple times, to that level of disgust that I offended their beloved city by wanting to remain near my friends and family where rent is affordable.

Of course I "suck" at tech in that light. I was refusing to join the cult.

That glorious feeling when you realize the scraps from a previous project are exactly what's needed for the one you're starting.

(Did I finish that previous project? Lol, no.)
