A 2nd century copy of the original statue of Artemis, ‘great mother goddess’, sister of Apollo, found at the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders, built in the 6th century BCE, located on the western coast of Asia Minor (modern Türkiye). Artemis, ‘Lady of the Animals’, was venerated as maiden goddess of forests, wild animals, childbirth, hunting (like the Roman Diana) and fertility, as evidenced by her upper body being covered in eggs (grape clusters or bull’s testicles), symbols of her role as a fertility goddess. She wears a mural crown, a large cylindrical headdress and neckpieces representing the zodiac and flowers. Her robe is decorated with lions, leopards, goats, griffins, and bulls. Flowers and bees flow down her sides. She is flanked by two stags.
