Last Thursday (6 March) was a windy red flag day in southern New Mexico.

A structure fire broke out in the village of Cloudcroft around sunset when the winds were easing up a bit.

But in these extremely dry conditions:

"Sources indicate that they contained several small spot fires ignited by flying embers. Officials say one ember start was put out a surprising distance away, at the junction of highways 244 and 82."

That was over 1/2 mile (800 meters) away, and the conditions were not extremely windy.

Please also note that the Gila will begin fire restrictions tomorrow, Monday, 10 March. This is another sign of how dry the conditions are in the southwest US.

@KrajciTom Thanks for sharing, the Cloudcroft Reader is doing important work...anyone living in the Western US near forest/grasslands should be paying attention to the questions they're raising

@KrajciTom
Yikes!

Did you end up getting any precipitation out of that front?

@IPXFong

Yesterday afternoon we got snow that has now melted and shows as 0.01 inch of water in the rain gauge. :-/

@KrajciTom
Yay? I guess it's better than nothing. The forecast says we've got a chance for rain off and on next week. Hopefully some will make it over to you.
