Just heard about a landlord who thought they’d found the perfect tenant for a quiet tucked away cul-de-sac in small market town. The neighbour had complained about every tenant to date, but now the landlord had found a single women in her early 70’s, who didn’t drive, had amazing references and kept her previous rental in immaculate condition for over 8 years.
While decorating the rental, the neighbour started asking landlord about new tenant. When told, the neighbour said ‘But are they deaf?’
Now I think it was perhaps none of the neighbour’s business to ask about the new tenant, but given they had complained bitterly about every single previous tenant, the landlord was just keen to get them on side and restore calm to the neighbourhood.
The implication that anyone over the age of 70 is deaf and going to have their tv on loud is unfounded.
But it’s also sadly a sign that some think it’s acceptable to discriminate against those who are #deaf.
