Bob Horowitz

Over the years, this 1907 Victorian on the corner of Dolores and 28th has acquired a bit of a tilt to the left. But hey, if I were that old I'd lean too.

@BobHorowitz Optical illusion. It’s on a slight hill. Look at the car, front wheels turned to prevent it from rolling backward, and along the seam where the foundation & the sidewalk meet, the foundation ‘thins out’ under the house, towards the corner. The poles follow the same line. It’s a gradual slope that the house is built upon.

That said, I’d love to drop a coin on the floor to see if it rolls toward the other side of the house… 😉

@Louis_Renault The street angle makes the eye perceive the tilt more, yes. But I think the house actually does lean, starting at the second floor.

Use you fingers or something equivalent to zoom the picture... and line the left edge of the house up with the edge of your phone or computer screen. You'll see the molding bend leftward.

Not caused by lens distortion.

Anyway, my 100 y.o. house also leans in the back. The wood frame bends down and the middle cups. Marbles roll. Furniture tilts.

@BobHorowitz well, upon further inspection, I will concede the point. I didn’t want to consider the verticality of the streetlight pole to be a reliable indicator, because judging from that would indicate a counterintuitive leaning *uphill* of the house, towards the viewer’s left. But you know, quite a bit of ground has moved since 1908, so, why not under that house?

@Louis_Renault Indeed. We are very wary of another 1906 level event. And those on landfill, anything half that.

I ran out of text in the last post to mention how much the angle of the 2nd story bay windows differ from the ground level doors.

This building, btw, was on my daily commute home for 30 years. I live maybe 6 blocks from here. It's a quiet neighborhood full of strollers, bikers, and joggers. Infertile ground for urban streetshooting.
