Spire of rock in the Smith Rock State Park towers above the Crooked River that has to meander around its base. Sparse groundcover, sage and juniper dot the banks of the river as the buff colored rock rises several hundred feet over the hikers that appear as specks on the trail between the river and the rising spire.
